A.J. Lawson Signs Two-Way Contract with Mavericks: Latest Intel on 15th Roster Spot

DALLAS — After being waived by the Dallas Mavericks earlier in the week, A.J. Lawson signed a two-way contract ahead of Thursday’s matchup against the Utah Jazz. The deal was completed in time for him to play. He finished with 2 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist in 7 minutes.
Lawson originally joined the Mavericks on a two-way contract after beginning the 2022-23 season with the Minnesota Timberwolves on a similar deal. Lawson entered last season on a two-way deal before having his contract converted to a four-year, $7.9 million contract with $1 million guaranteed at signing. With his salary for this season being non-guaranteed, the Mavericks waived him to create roster flexibility.
The Mavericks’ other two-way contract signees, Kessler Edwards and Brandon Williams, have been unable to play in preseason due to injuries. However, after signing Lawson, Dallas now has reached the NBA’s maximum of three players being signed to a two-way deal. However, what’s the latest regarding the 15th roster spot?
The expectation remains that Morris will sign a standard contract toward the end of preseason, a source told Dallas Hoops Journal. Morris is currently signed to an Exhibit 9 contract, meaning he isn’t occupying a standard roster spot. However, he would take the 15th roster spot barring any additional roster change.
Morris has been a respected locker room leader for the Mavericks and has a close relationship with Kyrie Irving, who arrived in Dallas together in part of the same midseason trade in February of 2023. The expectation when he signed his Exhibit 9 contract was to receive a standard deal.
While Jazian Gortman has been a standout in preseason, the Mavericks would need to create an opening to sign him to a contract.
