Dereck Lively II Downgraded to Out Against Pacers After Pre-Game Workout Injury
Mavericks center Dereck Lively II ruled out against Pacers with a right shoulder sprain. Dallas must adjust its center rotation as they aim to defeat Indiana.
DALLAS — Within an hour before their matchup against the Indiana Pacers, the Dallas Mavericks announced that Dereck Lively II had been ruled out with a right shoulder sprain after sustaining the injury during his pre-game warmup.
On Sunday, Lively logged an impressive double-double performance in the team’s 108-85 win over the Orlando Magic on Sunday night, where he posted 11 points and 11 rebounds in a commanding defensive display.
Lively has become an integral part of the Mavericks’ rotation, averaging 9.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 23 minutes per game this season. His defensive presence in the paint and rebounding have provided essential support, especially with his ability to create second-chance opportunities and alter shots.
“D Live (Dereck Lively II) has been giving us second and third chances all season, and defensively, he’s been able to change shots,” head coach Jason Kidd said after Sunday’s win. “He’s a big part of what we do on both ends.”
With Lively sidelined, the Mavericks are expected to lean more heavily on their veteran centers. Dwight Powell will likely see additional minutes. Dallas could also experiment with small-ball lineups, utilizing P.J. Washington at the five—a configuration the team has employed effectively throughout the season.
The Mavericks head into Monday’s game against Indiana with a 4-2 record, hoping to continue their strong start despite Lively’s absence. The initial injury report for Dallas also lists Danté Exum (right wrist surgery) and Maxi Kleber (right hamstring strain) as out, with no clear timetable for their return.
