ESPN Reports Mavericks' Luka Dončić to Be Re-Evaluated in One Month Due to Calf Strain
ESPN reports that Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Dončić is expected to be re-evaluated in one month and has received multiple opinions.
PHOENIX — The Dallas Mavericks will be without superstar guard Luka Dončić for the foreseeable future. He was ruled out for Friday’s matchup against the Phoenix Suns with a left calf strain—an injury he suffered during the Mavs’ loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves during the NBA’s Christmas Day slate.
After trying to attack the paint off the dribble, Dončić suffered the injury in the second quarter of Wednesday’s game against the Timberwolves. It was quickly evident there was an issue when Dončić grabbed his left leg multiple times and then headed to the locker room after the first stoppage in play. He recorded 14 points, five rebounds, and two assists in 16 minutes before his performance ended.
Dončić underwent an MRI on Thursday to determine the severity of his injury. Even before the imaging, he was quickly expected to be sidelined for the coming weeks after he left the injury using crutches.
While the Mavericks have yet to release an official communication about Dončić’s injury timetable or a re-evaluation period, ESPN reported that the Slovenian superstar is expected to be re-evaluated in one month and has received multiple opinions.
Based on a re-evaluation period of at least one month, it naturally suggests the severity being at least a Grade 2 strain, but the severity has yet to be confirmed by the team. If the re-evaluation occurred precisely in a month, it would be while the team is in Dallas during a two-game homestand involving matchups against the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards ahead of a five-game road trip.
Dončić has averaged 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists in 22 games this season. He’s dealt with various injuries between missing two games with a left heel contusion, five with a right wrist sprain, and one with a right knee contusion.
The Mavericks will face the Phoenix Suns on Friday at Footprint Center, with a tipoff time of 8:00 p.m. CST. This game will begin a four-game road trip.
