Mavericks Prepare for Hornets with Injury Updates on Lively, Irving, Powell, and Hardy
Get the latest injury updates ahead of the Mavericks’ game against the Hornets, including status reports on Lively II, Irving, Powell, and Hardy.
CHARLOTTE — The Dallas Mavericks will take on the Charlotte Hornets on Monday as the first game of the NBA’s Martin Luther Kings Jr. slate. Dealing with a right ankle sprain, Dereck Lively II is nearing a return to the lineup after being upgraded to questionable on the Mavs’ latest injury report.
Another notable development involving the Mavericks’ latest injury report is a name that’s no longer listed: Kyrie Irving. As he continues to manage a bulging disc injury, the two days off Dallas has had since Friday’s game have seemingly helped enough for him not to question his status against the Hornets.
During Friday’s victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Mavericks lost two players to new injuries: Dwight Powell and Jaden Hardy. Both players were ruled out for Monday’s game against Charlotte, with Powell’s injury designated a right hip strain and Hardy dealing with a right ankle sprain.
Head coach Jason Kidd praised how the Mavericks overcame losing Powell and Hardy in their victory over the Thunder. The team remains confident in overcoming losing key players after many weeks of having to do so.
"It shows the fight in that locker room,” Kidd said.” They believe in each other and stay together. We could’ve gone the other way after that third quarter, but the close games we’ve had recently have prepared us. The guys are competing at a high level and putting themselves in a position to win."
Irving expressed his backing for Hardy, who has already faced a recent injury absence due to an ankle sprain. Although Irving is currently dealing with his bulging disc injury, he recognizes the importance of his leadership for the younger players on the team as they navigate their challenges.
“Injuries suck, but it’s about maintaining a great mental frame and doing the extra work now,” Irving said. “It’s my job to give our young guys space and support them in vulnerable moments. I’ve been through surgeries, so I understand the game’s give and take. If you have a love for the game, that’ll be your motivation. We’re here as a support system, and I’ll do the best job I can as a leader to be there for them.”
Danté Exum traveled with the Mavericks to Charlotte, indicating ongoing progress in his recovery. Kidd noted that Exum has expanded his shooting range to include the perimeter; the next step is to be cleared for contact.
As it stands, Luka Dončić continues to progress in his recovery from a left calf strain but is expected to return in early February before the NBA All-Star break. While he didn’t jump much, he is eager to return to competition, as he was getting some quick shots up during halftime of Friday’s game.
Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. CST at Spectrum Center.
