Sources: Mavericks' Luka Dončić Progressing in Injury Recovery, On Track for February Return Before All-Star Break

The Dallas Mavericks have played without Luka Dončić since he suffered a left calf strain during the second quarter of the team’s Christmas Day loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves. There is more clarity about when he could potentially return to the lineup amid his ongoing recovery.

Sources indicated to DallasHoopsJournal.com that Dončić is on track for a return in February, before the All-Star break, barring any progress ahead of schedule.

One factor to consider is the Mavericks’ season-long five-game road trip against the New Orleans Pelicans on January 29. Dončić will likely be ready to play after this stretch, which includes stops against the Detroit Pistons, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Boston Celtics.

Dallas concludes the pre-All-Star break slate with a four-game homestand that starts on Feb. 8 against the Houston Rockets, followed by matchups against the Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors, and Miami Heat. Dončić could return as soon as the matchup against the Rockets. These games could prove pivotal for playoff positioning in the tightly packed Western Conference standings.

Dončić, averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists, has made steady progress in his recovery and is eager to return to competition. His presence remains vital for a Mavericks team navigating the challenges of staying afloat in a competitive playoff race.

The Mavericks have only played 20 games with Dončić and Kyrie Irving together in the lineup this season. Meanwhile, the team’s intended starting five — Dončić, Irving, Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, and Dereck Lively II — has only logged 119 minutes together across 14 games.

Dallas is hopeful for a healthy stretch run to build momentum, aiming to capitalize on the foundation laid during last season’s NBA Finals appearance.

With Dončić returning to lead a more experienced core, the Mavericks are focused on using the final months of the season to reestablish their identity, improve their seeding, and position themselves as a dangerous team once the playoffs begin.
