Cooper Flagg is available to play Thursday night against the Orlando Magic. Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd confirmed the news and said Flagg will be on a 20-to-25-minute restriction in his return from a left midfoot sprain.
Flagg has missed eight consecutive games since spraining the foot on Feb. 10 in Phoenix. The Mavericks confirmed the diagnosis after an MRI the following day and listed him as out with no timetable for return. The first movement in his injury designation came Monday when he was upgraded to doubtful.
He was upgraded again to questionable on Wednesday, and co-interim General Manager Michael Finley told 105.3 The Fan’s K&C Masterpiece earlier Thursday that playing Flagg was “the plan” while still calling it a game-time decision. Kidd’s confirmation on Thursday removes the remaining uncertainty.
Cooper Flagg’s Return Comes at a Critical Point for the Dallas Mavericks
Dallas is 21-40 on the season and has lost 14 of its last 16 games. The Mavericks have had a different leading scorer in each of their last five games during Flagg’s absence — a sign of how much the lineup has been unsettled without him. Thursday is the second night of a back-to-back and the second game of a six-game road trip that runs through Orlando, Boston, Toronto, Atlanta, and Memphis.
The minute restriction reflects a cautious approach to a back-to-back. The Mavericks setting a 20-to-25-minute ceiling gives the team its most important player back while protecting him from overexertion before the road trip hits its more significant stops. Boston on Friday is the natural spotlight game — Flagg grew up in Newport, Maine, a short drive from TD Garden, and the Celtics game comes around just once a season. A full return on a back-to-back closer to home carries real significance.
DallasHoopsJournal.com observed Flagg’s shootaround workout at Spectrum Center on Tuesday, the last public look at his health before the upgrade. He went through a full session with no visible hesitation on the left foot, launched off his left foot without issue, and shot one-legged jumpers planted on the left.
“He’s ramping up,” Kidd said Tuesday before the Charlotte game. “Everything is going well. Today he was going to get back into his routine, and hopefully, as we go on this road trip, he can get out and play in a game or two.”
What Cooper Flagg Brings Back to the Dallas Mavericks Lineup
Before going down, Flagg was averaging 20.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.8 blocks on 48.2% shooting across 49 games — leading Dallas in scoring and steals. He is the Mavericks’ most versatile offensive option and one of the few players on the roster capable of creating his own shot at a high level.
The Mavericks also get Thompson and Marshall back on Thursday, both listed as probable. Getting all three available at once gives Kidd the most complete lineup he has had in weeks. Dallas shot 3-of-22 from three in Tuesday’s loss to Charlotte, a number that should look different with Thompson, Marshall, and Flagg all in the rotation.
P.J. Washington, who played alongside Knueppel in Charlotte before the trade to Dallas, spoke to what Flagg’s return means for the roster last week.
“We need him, and it shows,” Washington said. “Just him being his age and doing what he’s doing — you don’t really see too many guys doing that. So I think it’s no question.”
Rookie of the Year Race Resumes With Flagg Back on the Floor
Flagg’s return puts him back in the Rookie of the Year conversation at a key stretch. He and Charlotte Hornets guard Kon Knueppel — former Duke teammates and roommates — are the two frontrunners. Knueppel is averaging 19.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists on 48.9% shooting in 60 games. Flagg leads at 20.4 points but has played 11 fewer games.
Knueppel had 13 points on 1-of-7 from three in Tuesday’s win over Dallas — one of the quieter nights of his rookie season. With 21 games remaining, every game Flagg plays back at full strength matters in a race that is still very much open.
Tip-off Thursday is at 6 p.m. CT at Kia Center in Orlando.
