Why Dallas Mavericks Cannot Convert Ryan Nembhard’s Two-Way Contract Yet

Ryan Nembhard’s rise in the Dallas Mavericks’ rotation has pushed a procedural question to the forefront of the team’s season: when can the organization convert his two-way contract into a standard NBA deal? His recent surge has strengthened the urgency, but league rules prevent Dallas from acting for several more weeks.

Nembhard has averaged 7.9 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in nine games this season. His play has accelerated sharply over the last three outings, where he has produced 17.7 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 5.7 assists while shooting 66.7% from the field. He capped that stretch with 28 points, three rebounds, and 10 assists on 12-of-14 shooting in Monday’s win over the Denver Nuggets.

NBA Rules Prevent a Conversion Until January 6

Despite the rookie’s growing role, the Mavericks cannot convert his deal yet. Dallas is hard-capped at the second apron, a status that blocks any roster additions — including two-way conversions — until Jan. 6. The restriction applies to all signings, regardless of team injuries or roster shortages.

The rule leaves the Mavericks in a holding pattern even as Nembhard’s playing time increases. He logged 23 minutes against the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, 21 minutes against the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, and 35 minutes in Denver. At this pace, he is trending toward the 50-game maximum allowed for two-way players before the season reaches its midpoint.

Once Jan. 6 arrives, the signing freeze lifts and Dallas regains the ability to make changes. But even then, the process is not straightforward.

Danté Exum’s Injury Creates a Path — But Not a Spot Yet

The Mavericks already hold 15 standard contracts, the NBA’s roster limit. Converting Nembhard would require an open slot, and none exist. The most realistic avenue is tied to Danté Exum, who will undergo season-ending knee surgery. His one-year, $3.3 million contract remains guaranteed, and Dallas would need to waive him to open the necessary space.

If Dallas chooses to move forward, the sequence would be simple. On Jan. 6, the league’s restrictions expire. The Mavericks could then waive Exum and elevate Nembhard to a standard deal. Any conversion must occur before the last day of the regular season for postseason eligibility.

The timing matters because Nembhard has quickly become a dependable part of the rotation. His recent stretch has showcased his ability to initiate offense, organize half-court actions, and provide stability for a team dealing with injuries in the backcourt. His impact has far exceeded what is typically expected from a developmental-contract player.

For now, Dallas can only wait. The rookie’s play has made a conversion appear increasingly likely, but league rules ensure the earliest possible resolution remains more than a month away.
