Paige Bueckers Makes History at All-Star Weekend
Bueckers made her first WNBA All-Star Game appearance on Saturday in Indianapolis, becoming the 10th rookie ever to start the midseason showcase. She opened the scoring with the first-ever four-point shot in All-Star Game history and finished with six points and eight assists in Team Collier’s 151–131 win.
“It’s super crazy to think about, like, my whole life journey up to this point,” Bueckers said. “Now I’m being coached by Cheryl [Reeve], playing with the best players in the world. It’s just a crazy experience. I’m extremely thankful for it.”
The No. 1 overall pick said she aimed to soak in the moment while continuing to represent her team and city. “This whole season has been such a blessing,” Bueckers said. “I’m just trying to be a sponge and soak everything in… It’s a huge honor to represent the Wings. The fans, the city — they’ve embraced me and my teammates since Day 1. I’m just grateful.”
Through 18 games, Bueckers leads all WNBA rookies in scoring (18.4), assists (5.5), and steals (1.7), while ranking top 10 in the league in overall scoring.
DiJonai Carrington Cleared to Return After Rib Injury
After missing the last nine games due to a rib injury sustained in late June, DiJonai Carrington has been cleared to return and will be available for Tuesday’s matchup. The veteran guard practiced fully before the All-Star break and was held out of the Wings’ last contest as a precaution.
Carrington was averaging 11.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.4 steals before the injury and is expected to bring added energy and physicality back to the backcourt.
The Wings will be without Tyasha Harris (left knee), Myisha Hines-Allen (right lower leg), and Maddy Siegrist (right knee). Harris and Siegrist are both out indefinitely, while Hines-Allen continues to recover and is expected to be re-evaluated later this week.
For the Storm, Katie Lou Samuelson will miss Tuesday’s game due to a right knee injury.
Rookies Leading the Charge for Dallas
Dallas continues to get major contributions from its trio of first-year guards. Bueckers, JJ Quinerly, and Aziaha James rank first, second, and third among WNBA rookies in both scoring and assists for the month of July. Bueckers leads with 18.4 points per game, followed by Quinerly at 16.2 and James at 12.8. In assists, Quinerly holds the top spot with 5.0 per game, followed by Bueckers at 4.8 and James at 3.8.
Quinerly, the 27th overall pick in the 2025 Draft, is on track to become just the 11th third-round pick since 2000 to average at least five points per game in her rookie season. Since entering the starting lineup, she’s posted 16.0 points per game and continues to thrive in an expanded role.
James, who averaged just 2.0 points over her first 13 appearances, has scored in double figures in eight of her last 10 games, including a 28-point performance against Phoenix on July 3 — the second-highest scoring output by a rookie this season.
Li Yueru Facing Former Team
Li Yueru will face her former team for the first time since being traded from Seattle to Dallas on June 14. Since joining the Wings, the 6-foot-7 center has averaged 8.9 points and 7.2 rebounds while recording three double-doubles in 11 games. Her best showing came on July 9 in Chicago, when she tallied 18 points and 10 rebounds in just 26 minutes.
Yueru’s time in Seattle was limited, averaging 2.8 points and 1.6 rebounds in nine games. She has already surpassed those marks and carved out a key frontcourt role for Dallas alongside Luisa Geiselsöder and Haley Jones.
Seattle’s Defense Sets the Tone
Seattle enters Tuesday’s game as one of the league’s premier defensive teams. In their final outing before the All-Star break, the Storm held the Golden State Valkyries to 58 points on 31.7 percent shooting from the field and just 7-of-31 from beyond the arc — both season-best marks for Seattle’s defense.
Skylar Diggins remains the heartbeat of the Storm, averaging 17.5 points and 5.8 assists per game. She made history in the All-Star Game by recording the event’s first-ever triple-double: 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 15 assists. Nneka Ogwumike added 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the same game and previously posted a 23-point, 18-rebound outing against the Wings on May 19.
What’s at Stake
Seattle looks to complete a regular season sweep of the Wings and solidify its playoff positioning in the Western Conference. Dallas, meanwhile, is trying to reset and regroup after a rough first half of the season. The return of Carrington and the continued emergence of its rookie core gives Dallas a chance to establish momentum heading into the home stretch.
“We just showed a fight,” Bueckers said after the Wings’ last game before the break. “Now we’ve got to put it together — not just in the fourth quarter, but from start to finish.”
