Klay Thompson Ruled Out vs. Phoenix Suns As Dallas Mavericks Continue Adjusting Rotation

Klay Thompson will not play Tuesday night against the Phoenix Suns, further thinning a Dallas Mavericks rotation already operating without several key contributors.

Thompson, who had been listed as questionable due to rest, did not participate in shootaround and was officially ruled out ahead of tipoff. Dallas will also be without its three G League two-way players — Moussa Cissé, Miles Kelly, and Ryan Nembhard — all of whom are unavailable for the matchup.

The absences come as the Dallas Mavericks continue adjusting to a reshaped roster following last week’s trade deadline, while managing longer-term injuries to Kyrie Irving (left knee surgery) and Dereck Lively II (right foot surgery).

Injury Report Tightens Rotation Without Klay Thompson

Thompson’s absence removes a familiar scoring option and floor spacer from the lineup. He has averaged 11.6 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 48 games this season and scored 19 points Saturday in San Antonio.

With Thompson and Irving both out, Dallas will lean further on ball movement and guard organization, areas that head coach Jason Kidd pointed to following Saturday’s loss.

“I thought (Marvin) Bagley was great,” Kidd said of one of the team’s recent additions. “Showing his range, being able to shoot the three, offensive rebound, and then also being able to finish. I thought, defensively, he was good too. Then Tyus being able to run the offense. I thought the connection with him and Klay very quickly, being able to throw the ball ahead. Tyus taking care of the ball, getting the ball to the right guys and then being able to finish.”

With Thompson unavailable, that offensive connection will need to shift, placing greater responsibility on guards Max Christie, Brandon Williams and Tyus Jones to initiate and sustain offensive flow.

Phoenix Suns Focus Defensive Attention on Cooper Flagg

Phoenix enters the matchup intent on slowing Cooper Flagg, who remains central to Dallas’ offensive structure. Suns head coach Jordan Ott emphasized that limiting Flagg begins before the ball is even set in the half court.

“It starts right off the bat, right off and transition,” Ott said. “We’ll put multiple bodies in front of him. He is so big, so strong. He’s able to get to the rim. If we don’t do it early and then in the half court, that’s where he’s coming. His jump shots have improved, his passing’s improved. You can see he’s taking leaps. It’s going to have to be multiple bodies, multiple different matchups.”

Flagg is not listed on the injury report after being limited to 26 minutes Saturday due to back stiffness. He participated fully in practice Monday.

Defensive Pressure and Pace a Point of Emphasis

Kidd also pointed to Phoenix’s defensive identity as a challenge that demands discipline from a short-handed group.

“They’ve taken on [Dillon Brooks’] personality with competing on the defensive end,” Kidd said. “They pick you up full court. They’re top-ten in defense, they turn you over if you don’t take care of the ball.”

With fewer available players and less margin for error, ball security and transition defense will be critical for Dallas.

Dallas Mavericks Face Road Test Before the Break

Dallas enters Tuesday’s contest at 19–33, currently 12th in the Western Conference, riding a seven-game losing streak. The Suns, meanwhile, sit seventh in the West and are working through their own adjustments as key players return to the lineup.

Tuesday marks the second meeting between the teams this season. Phoenix won the first matchup on Nov. 12 in Dallas, 123–114, despite the Mavericks shooting 50 percent from the field and recording 32 assists.

Following the Suns game, Dallas will travel to Los Angeles to face the Lakers on Thursday in its final contest before the All-Star break. With Thompson sidelined and multiple roster spots unavailable, the focus remains on execution, adaptability and continued evaluation as the season moves forward.
