The Dallas Mavericks had it on their face when the Boston Celtics handed them a 110-100 defeat this past week. Afterwards, the real buzz came from a late-game moment that briefly ignited social media speculation about tension between Jaylen Brown and rookie sensation Cooper Flagg.
Brown delivered a vintage performance with 33 points and 11 rebounds, but Flagg stole plenty of the spotlight despite the loss. The No. 1 overall pick poured in 36 points, grabbed nine boards, and handed out six assists, looking unfazed by the moment or the matchup.
However, late in the fourth quarter, a hot-mic clip caught Brown questioning a whistle that sent Flagg to the free-throw line, pointing out that the rookie had reached double-digit attempts. The exchange went viral, and within minutes, online chatter framed it as the beginning of a rivalry.
Flagg finished 10-of-11 at the stripe, tied for his second-highest free throw total this season. Early in the game, he absorbed contact without a call. As the game tightened, officials adjusted, and Flagg capitalized.
Jaylen Brown Shuts Down Rivalry Talk
Brown wasted little time shutting that narrative down. On his livestream the following night, the Celtics star flipped frustration into respect.
“My boy is him,” the Celtics star said. “He’s got my respect for sure. He scored 30 on us on all floaters,” Brown said. He went further, framing Flagg’s rise through the lens of age and poise. “For a 19-year-old? Spectacular.”
So many replies last week were suggesting that Jaylen Brown had some beef with Cooper Flagg.

Brown said otherwise on his stream:
“My boy is him. He’s got my respect for sure…He scored 30 on us on all floaters.”

That said, the praise sits right amid Flagg’s rapid ascent since a relatively quiet start to the 2025–26 season. Drafted first overall in 2025, he has grown into a nightly problem for defenses, averaging 20.3 points per game and stacking 30-point performances over the past few weeks.
Cooper Flagg’s Rapid Rise Continues
Apart from any speculation around his rivalry or a growing beef with another NBA star, Cooper Flagg is proving his critics wrong in spectacular fashion this season.
At just 19 years old, the rookie has shaken off early-season doubts about his potential and is rapidly evolving into one of the NBA’s standout players. After facing skepticism over his development, Flagg is now posting eye-popping averages, including 27.3 points per game in February.
With notable numbers in rebounds, assists, and blocks, and an impressive shooting line that includes 49.2 percent from the field and 93 percent from the free-throw line, he’s giving Dallas fans high hopes for a secure future.
However, Flagg’s breakout moment came on January 29 against the Charlotte Hornets when he notched a historic 49 points.
Even with the grueling nature of an 82-game NBA season, Flagg seems unfazed by the so-called “rookie wall,” displaying a tenacity and composure that truly sets him apart. Coaches and general managers are starting to see that he’s exceeding expectations.
