Dallas Mavericks sharpshooter Klay Thompson was not present at Monday morning’s shootaround at Ball Arena and was later added to the injury report as probable with illness, creating uncertainty hours before the team closes its three-game West Coast trip against the Denver Nuggets.

Thompson’s status comes two days after he nearly skipped Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers due to soreness and fatigue — only to produce one of his strongest performances of the season.

Ocean Therapy Sparked Saturday’s Breakout

Thompson said he didn’t feel well after Friday’s loss to the Lakers and initially thought about resting the second night of the back-to-back. Instead, he went back to a familiar routine. With a home and boat in the Los Angeles area, he spent part of Saturday on the water before diving into the Pacific Ocean.

“Any time you touch the earth it gives you energy,” Thompson said after Saturday’s win. “I went to my boat and got out in the sea.”

Within hours, Thompson was torching the Clippers for 23 points, including 17 in a blistering fourth quarter. He hit six of his 10 attempts from beyond the arc and shot 8-of-13 overall, providing the late push Dallas needed to snap a three-game losing streak.

“I said, ‘Man, I know I’m sore, but this is when your character is revealed,’” Thompson said. “I could have easily sat out because I’ve been really sore, I’ve been tired, mentally fatigue. But man, I don’t have much basketball left in me. If I can squeeze out a few more years, I’ll be lucky.”

Naji Marshall praised the veteran’s impact, calling him “the ultimate professional” and noting that Thompson can swing a game “on any given night.”

Dallas Mavericks Face Denver Nuggets With Multiple Rotation Questions

Dallas enters Monday’s matchup managing a long injury list and further changes to its rotation. Dereck Lively II remains out with right foot swelling, while guards Kyrie Irving (left ACL surgery) and Danté Exum (knee surgery) also remain sidelined. The Mavericks have ruled out center Daniel Gafford due to an ankle issue despite being at shootaround.

Thompson being added to the injury report with illness — combined with his absence from shootaround — leaves his final availability dependent on how he responds closer to game time.

Denver enters the matchup having won four of six, including Saturday’s 130-112 victory in Phoenix behind another near-triple-double from Nikola Jokic. The Nuggets shot 58 percent from the field and 58 percent from three in that win, with Jokic, Jamal Murray, and former Maverick Tim Hardaway Jr. all scoring at least 23 points.

For Dallas, the game closes a Western swing that began with Friday’s loss to the Lakers and continued with Saturday’s breakout performance by Cooper Flagg. The 18-year-old became the youngest player in NBA history to score 35 points in a game and drew praise from Thompson, who said Flagg “has every tool to be great” and compared his early trajectory to Byron Scott’s early assessments of a young Kobe Bryant.
