DHJ Quick Take
- Mark Cuban’s Seller’s Remorse: Mark Cuban regrets selling the Dallas Mavericks to Miriam Adelson and Patrick Dumont.
- The Disastrous Luka Dončić Trade: Former GM Nico Harrison traded Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis without consulting Cuban; the move backfired significantly as Davis played only 29 games before being traded to the Washington Wizards.
- A New Era in Dallas: Following the Luka trade, the Mavericks are in a rebuilding phase centered around Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving.
Mark Cuban doesn’t regret selling his majority stake in the Dallas Mavericks.
He does, however, regret who he sold his majority stake to.
During an appearance on the Intersections podcast, Cuban said he shouldn’t have sold his majority stake in the Mavericks to Miriam Adelson and Patrick Dumont.
“I regret who I sold to,” Cuban said. “I made a lot of mistakes in the process and I’ll leave it at that.”
Under Adelson and Dumont, the Mavericks traded Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers last season. Because Cuban is no longer Dallas’ principal owner, he wasn’t consulted about the blockbuster trade, which was spearheaded by former general manager Nico Harrison.
The Mavericks missed the playoffs last season after trading Dončić. Dumont and Harrison were booed by fans at every game at the American Airlines Center.
Dallas fired Harrison in November after starting the season off miserably. Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi are the co-interim general managers at the moment.
10-time All-Star Anthony Davis, the player Harrison targeted in the Dončić trade with the Lakers, played in just 29 games with the Mavericks because of injuries. The big man was traded to the Washington Wizards at this year’s NBA trade deadline.
Dončić, who was devastated when the Mavericks traded him, cried for hours and threw his phone at a wall after he was traded to the Lakers. Not because he hated Los Angeles. But because the All-Star and future Hall of Famer wanted to spend his entire NBA career in Dallas.
Harrison had issues with Dončić’s weight, injury issues and lack of defensive effort. He was ready to trade Dončić after the Mavericks lost the 2024 NBA Finals to the Boston Celtics.
The Lakers signed Dončić to a massive three-year, $165 million extension in August. Dončić leads the NBA in points per game this season and is widely expected to spend the rest of his career with Los Angeles. He has gotten over the Mavericks trade and loves playing for the Lakers and living in Los Angeles.
Dallas got very lucky by winning the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery after trading Dončić to the Lakers. The franchise selected Cooper Flagg, who looks like a future star in the league. The Mavericks are very much looking forward to Flagg playing with All-Star guard Kyrie Irving next season. Irving is not playing this season after tearing his left ACL last season against the Sacramento Kings.
Even though the Mavericks have Flagg and Irving, the Dončić trade will always torment Cuban and Dallas fans. Dončić appeared in 422 games with Dallas. He averaged 28.6 points, 8.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game and made five All-Star teams and five All-NBA teams. Luka is undoubtedly one of the top players in Mavericks history.
The Mavericks are in deep rebuild mode in the post-Dončić era. Meanwhile, the Lakers are in third place in the rugged Western Conference standings. They are looking to win their 18th championship in franchise history this season with Dončić, NBA icon LeBron James and Austin Reaves leading the way.
The hope in Dallas is that the organization gets fortunate again and has a top pick in the 2026 draft. The Mavericks could be a dangerous team next season with Flagg and Irving leading the way if one of the top college players lands in Big D.
For now, though, Cuban will continue to regret his decision to sell his majority stake to Adelson and Dumont. Dončić would still be in a Mavericks uniform had Cuban not made that massive mistake.
