Sam Amick reported that Dallas and the Miami Heat are among the many teams that have checked in on Johnson. Rival executives view the 30-year-old as the Nugget most likely to be traded this offseason, in large part because he has one season left on his contract at $23 million.
Why the Denver Nuggets Could Move Cameron Johnson
Denver is fielding calls on its players but is not actively shopping them, league sources told The Athletic. The Nuggets are searching for another creative ballhandler and want to re-sign restricted free agent forward Peyton Watson and small forward Spencer Jones, and they have been widely expected to shed salary to make those moves easier.
The interest in Johnson also sits against the context of uncertainty surrounding Nikola Jokić, who is eligible for an extension this summer and would otherwise reach free agency in 2027. The three-time MVP has signaled a desire to stay in Denver, but the situation has driven speculation about how aggressively the Nuggets reshape their roster.
Cameron Johnson’s Fit Alongside Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving
Johnson averaged 12.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists last season while shooting 48.0% from the field, 43.0% from 3-point range and 83.9% from the free-throw line across 54 games. A midseason knee injury cost him roughly six weeks. Denver acquired him last July from the Brooklyn Nets in a deal that sent out Michael Porter Jr. and a 2032 first-round pick.
The reported interest fits an active offseason for Dallas under president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri, who has also discussed a trade for Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard. Johnson would give the Mavericks a proven floor spacer on an expiring contract alongside reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving.
