NBA Trade Idea Sends New Orleans Pelicans’ Trey Murphy III to Dallas Mavericks
An NBA trade idea sending Trey Murphy III from the New Orleans Pelicans to the Dallas Mavericks has been created.
NBA writer Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report created the following trade idea between the Pelicans and Mavericks:
New Orleans Pelicans get: P.J. Washington, Max Christie, Olivier-Maxence Prosper, a 2029 first-round pick (via LAL) and a 2032 first-round pick (top-three protected)
Dallas Mavericks get: Trey Murphy III
Murphy III played in 53 games for the Pelicans last season. He averaged 21.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.7 blocks while shooting 45.4% from the field, 36.1% from beyond the arc and 88.7% from the free-throw line.
The Pelicans signed Murphy III to a four-year, $112 million extension last year. Murphy III will make $25 million next season. He has career averages of 13.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.5 blocks in the NBA.
“The Mavericks aren’t a big-trade candidate at the moment, since they’ll want to see how No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg acclimates and when Kyrie Irving might be ready to return from his ACL injury. If they get good news on both situations, though, they could be ready for an all-in push for a championship,” Buckley wrote.
“This price probably looks steep to some, but the Mavs could pay it if they think Murphy is the missing piece of their championship puzzle. And maybe they would. He’s almost a turbo-charged three-and-D support piece, boasting both a 38.3 percent career splash rate and the physical tools to be an all-purpose defender. Plus, he just shattered his previous bests in points (21.2) and assists (3.5) this past season.”
Dallas missed the 2025 playoffs after making the NBA Finals in 2024. Nico Harrison shockingly traded Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers for Christie and Anthony Davis in February.
Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd is expected to start D’Angelo Russell, Klay Thompson, Flagg, Davis and Daniel Gafford to begin next season. Once Irving returns from his ACL injury, he will replace Russell in the starting lineup.
If Harrison trades for Murphy III, Kidd could start Irving, Thompson, Murphy III, Flagg and Davis.
