The WNBA and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association have reached a tentative verbal agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement, according to Annie Costabile of Front Office Sports.
A term sheet will now go to players and the WNBA Board of Governors for a vote to ratify the deal.
After the initial news broke, ESPN’s Alexa Philippou shared a comment from WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert amid the latest developments that both sides “have aligned on key elements on a new collective bargaining agreement together.”
The agreement comes after eight consecutive days of marathon negotiations, with neither side speaking to reporters following Tuesday’s session, which ran past 3:30 a.m. EDT. Revenue sharing had been the primary sticking point throughout negotiations.
Engelbert said after Sunday’s 15-hour session that the league wanted to do “everything we can for the players.” Union executive director Terri Carmichael Jackson acknowledged heading into Monday’s session that big issues still remained.
The two sides had logged roughly 90 hours of face-to-face bargaining since the first in-person session last Tuesday. Players’ executive committee members Nneka Ogwumike, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Brianna Turner, and Alysha Clark were present for most discussions.
The WNBA’s regular season is scheduled to begin May 8.
