DHJ Quick Take: Smith Practices, Bueckers, Shepard, And Fudd Full Go
Forward Alanna Smith took part in the Dallas Wings‘ first practice since the All-Star break, and coach Jose Fernandez said her availability will be evaluated over the next two days.
- Did Smith practice? She appeared to participate Monday, the clearest sign of progress since her right leg injury.
- What did Fernandez say? He said the team will see how she does Tuesday, how she feels afterward, and then again after shootaround.
- What about the All-Star participants? Paige Bueckers, Jessica Shepard, and Azzi Fudd all participated Monday.
- What’s next? Dallas hosts the Atlanta Dream on Wednesday, July 29, at 7 p.m. CT at College Park Center, airing on USA Network.
ARLINGTON, Texas — Alanna Smith has spent this season getting healthy and then getting hurt again. On Monday, for the first time in more than two weeks, she went through a practice with everybody else.
Smith participated in the Dallas Wings‘ first session since the All-Star break, which included extended film work before moving to live five-on-five. Wings coach Jose Fernandez wouldn’t commit beyond that.
“We’ll see how she does tomorrow, how she feels after tomorrow, and then after shootaround,” Fernandez said.
Smith hurt her right lower leg on July 12 against the Chicago Sky and has missed four games since. Dallas listed her as doubtful for the first two, then upgraded her to questionable before the July 22 trip to Portland. She didn’t play in that one either. That morning she was seen working off to the side with the training staff during shootaround.
Navigating Alanna Smith’s Injury
This is the third time an injury has interrupted her first season in Dallas.
Smith broke her nose in preseason and wore a mask. A June collision with Gabriela Jaquez put her in concussion protocol and cost her three more games. She returned July 2 on limited minutes.
“I wouldn’t say I’m in a great rhythm at the moment. This whole season I’ve been in and out a little bit, so I haven’t really been able to get into a flow,” Smith said on July 2. “This is probably one of a few games this season where I’ve felt a little bit like myself.”
Through 20 appearances, Smith has averaged 3.8 points and 2.9 rebounds in 14.2 minutes on 38.5% shooting. She started each of Dallas’ first seven games and has come off the bench since.
Dallas signed Smith as a free agent last offseason. Australia has since named her to its 2026 FIBA World Cup roster.
The All-Stars Are Back
Smith began the season as a starter, but Awak Kuier has often started as the season has gone on, lining up alongside Jessica Shepard. Dallas has turned to different bench players depending on matchups, from 6-foot-7 Li Yueru to match size to Maddy Siegrist when more offensive firepower on the wing has been required. However, Dallas has also often deployed three guards and gone small.
Fernandez was asked how much Paige Bueckers, Shepard, and Azzi Fudd did Monday after Chicago.
“They participated,” Fernandez said.
Dallas must submit an injury report to the league by 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Wings practice that afternoon and hold a shootaround Wednesday morning before hosting Atlanta at College Park Center at 7 p.m. CT on USA Network.
