New York Knicks star point guard Jalen Brunson underwent surgery on his left wrist Tuesday and the 2026 NBA Finals MVP is expected to return to basketball activities later this summer, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.
Brunson played through the left wrist injury during the Knicks’ championship run.
New York beat the Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs to win the championship this year. It was the Knicks’ first title in 53 years.
A three-time All-Star, Brunson averaged 26.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game last season. The Knicks won 53 games and were the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
In the 2026 East playoffs, Brunson put up 26.9 points and 6.6 assists per game against Atlanta, Philadelphia and Cleveland. He won the 2026 Eastern Conference Finals MVP trophy.
The Knicks defeated the Spurs in the NBA Finals in five games. Brunson averaged 32.6 points and 4.6 assists per game.
New York signed Brunson, who turns 30 on August 31, to a four-year, $104 million contract in free agency in July 2022. Brunson then signed a four-year, $156 million extension with the Knicks in 2024. He took a huge pay cut so Leon Rose could add more talent.
Brunson is set to make $37.7 million next season. The lefty is averaging 26.3 points and 6.8 assists per game in the regular season and 28.4 points and 6.1 assists per game in the playoffs as a member of the Knicks, who also won the IST title last season.
