Anthony Davis Prefers To Remain With Dallas Mavericks For Rest Of Season
Anthony Davis prefers to remain with the Dallas Mavericks for the rest of the season, according to NBA insider Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
The Los Angeles Lakers traded Davis to the Mavericks last season in the blockbuster Luka Dončić trade. Getting traded again would force Davis and his family to relocate once more.
“My best read on Davis, meanwhile, remains that he would prefer to stay put for the rest of this season after absorbing the shock of last February’s sudden in-season relocation from the Lakers to the Mavericks and a string of injuries since he became a Mav,” Stein wrote. “It likewise appears that there is little active momentum toward a Davis deal before the Feb. 5 deadline in the wake of the ligament damage in his left hand sustained on Jan. 8 that is expected to sideline Davis into March. He turns 33 on March 11.”
Davis is out with ligament damage in his left hand. He’s not expected to play until late February at the earliest.
The 2026 NBA trade deadline is February 5 at 3 p.m. ET.
A Chicago native, Davis is averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.7 blocks per game this season. He’s appeared in just 20 games.
There are several members of the Mavericks interested in seeing Davis play alongside Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving, sources told DallasHoopsJournal. Dallas, though, is better served to lose games because the 2026 NBA Draft is the final draft in which the franchise controls its first-round pick until 2031.
A top 75 player of all time, Davis has played in only 29 games with the Mavericks since the shocking Dončić trade with the Lakers last season. Dallas is currently in 12th place in the Western Conference standings.
Davis is making $54.1 million this season. He’s eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension in August.
Rich Paul’s priority is to get an extension done for Davis in the offseason, sources said, but it’s unknown if the Mavericks will offer Davis an extension due to his age and injury history, which is why Paul wants his client traded this season, sources said.
Before he hurt his left hand, Davis drew trade interest from the Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors and Golden State Warriors, sources said. The future Hall of Famer doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract.
Davis, who turns 33 in March, has played for the New Orleans Pelicans, Lakers and Mavericks. He holds career averages of 24.0 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.3 blocks per game. The Kentucky product won the 2020 championship with the Lakers.
