For Anthony Davis, early adversity isn’t cause for panic — it’s a test of discipline. After the Dallas Mavericks dropped their second straight game to open the season, the veteran forward made it clear the team doesn’t need an overhaul. They just need a win.
“It just takes a win,” Davis said. “Our trust and effort were better tonight than Wednesday. We’ve got to play with defensive aggression for all 48 minutes. I’d rather this happen now so we can correct it early.”
Davis, who finished with 27 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists in Friday’s 117–107 loss to the Washington Wizards, emphasized the importance of staying grounded through a long season. He’s seen how quickly momentum can swing once a team finds its rhythm.
“I’ve been in this league long enough to know you don’t overreact to two games,” Davis said. “We’ve shown stretches of who we can be. It’s about consistency and communication — not panicking.”
Veteran Presence Guiding a Young Core
The Mavericks’ retooled roster features several new faces — including rookie forward Cooper Flagg, who continues to adjust to the speed and physicality of the NBA. Davis said part of his role now is keeping younger players steady as they navigate early-season challenges.
“We’re building chemistry every night,” Davis said. “Guys are learning where to be on both ends, and that comes with time. The key is not letting frustration get in the way of progress.”
Flagg, who scored 18 points and handed out six assists against Washington, said Davis’ leadership has already set the tone. “He’s been great — vocal, keeping everyone accountable,” Flagg said. “He’s telling us to talk more on defense and trust the system. We’re still figuring it out, but he’s been helping everyone stay locked in.”
Dallas Mavericks Look to Regroup vs. Raptors
The Mavericks will continue their five-game homestand Sunday night against the Toronto Raptors (1–1), aiming to correct defensive breakdowns and cut down on turnovers that have cost them early leads.
For Davis, the solution is straightforward — not easy, but simple. “You get one win,” he said. “That’s all it takes to reset your confidence and get back to who you are.”
Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CST at American Airlines Center.
