Trae Young To Re-Sign With Washington Wizards On $212 Million Deal

DHJ Quick Take: Young Commits to Massive Wizards Extension

  • Mega-Deal Agreed: All-Star guard Trae Young intends to sign a lucrative four-year, $212 million contract extension to remain a long-term cornerstone for the Washington Wizards.
  • Injury-Shortened Debut: The commitment locks Young down despite a highly limited initial stint with Washington, where injuries restricted him to just five games—averaging 15.2 points and 6.2 assists—after being acquired from the Atlanta Hawks in January.
  • Draft Capital Flexibility: Securing Young gives Washington immense leverage heading into the offseason, where they hold the No. 1 overall pick and can either select a top prospect like AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson or Cameron Boozer or trade the selection for a massive haul of assets.

Trae Young intends to sign a four-year, approximately $212 million deal to stay with the Washington Wizards, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.

Young was an unrestricted free agent after declining his 2026-27 player option.

The Wizards acquired Young from the Atlanta Hawks in January. Young played in just five games with Washington because of injuries. He averaged 15.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game.

Dallas Hoops Journal senior reporter Grant Afseth reported in January that Young was expected to remain with the Wizards after the blockbuster trade with the Hawks.

Washington has the first overall pick in this year’s draft. The current roster is headlined by Young, Anthony Davis, Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, Tre Johnson, Bilal Coulibaly and Bub Carrington.

The Wizards are expected to draft AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson or Cameron Boozer with the first pick. They could also trade the first pick for a lavish haul.

A four-time All-Star, Young holds career averages of 25.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 9.8 assists per game with the Hawks and Wizards. He led Atlanta to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021.

The Wizards haven’t made the playoffs since 2021. It will be fascinating to see how Washington performs next season.
