DHJ Quick Take: Azzi Fudd Elevates Bench Efficiency in Career-High Outing
- Mid-Range Production Surge: Rookie guard Azzi Fudd turned in the most productive scoring performance of her young professional career Monday night, contributing 12 points on a highly efficient 6-of-9 shooting. The No. 1 overall pick generated her scoring almost exclusively inside the arc, relying on a crisp pull-up game to anchor a 92-69 rout of Washington.
- Capitalizing on Defensive Coverage: Operating at a stellar 61.1% from the field through three appearances, Fudd’s offensive impact has climbed steadily each night out. The rookie noted that her multi-level approach is a direct product of reading defensive closeouts and capitalizing on the open floor spaces created by her teammates.
- Expanding the Rotational Workload: After carefully managing Fudd’s minutes following a minor right knee injury that sidelined her for Game 2, head coach Jose Fernandez announced plans to officially increase her workload. Fernandez pointed to her comfort level creating off the bounce and her active defensive rotations as the green light to expand her role.
- The Synergy Lineup Catalyst: Fudd served as a key contributor bridging the third and fourth quarters in a versatile, high-scoring lineup alongside Paige Bueckers, Arike Ogunbowale, Maddy Siegrist, and Jessica Shepard. The unit maintained the starters’ fast tempo and cleanly executed a defensive scheme that held Washington to a league-wide season low of 9 points in the opening frame.
- The Live-Rep Practice Dividend: Fudd credited the team’s rare two-day weekend practice block for her rapid rhythm on the floor. After a highly compressed opening schedule left minimal time for full-court execution, the opportunity to play through live scenarios rather than just discussing them allowed the rookie to settle in seamlessly.
ARLINGTON, Texas — Azzi Fudd had her best scoring night as a pro Monday. The Dallas Wings rookie put up 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting in a 92-69 rout of the Washington Mystics at College Park Center.
Fudd was the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s WNBA Draft. She played 24 minutes off the bench Monday and added 2 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. It was the Wings’ fourth game, and their best. The 23-point win closed a three-game homestand and pulled Dallas even at 2-2.
Wings coach Jose Fernandez has not rushed Fudd, and Monday was the next step. A right knee injury cost Fudd the team’s second game. She played 18 minutes in one appearance before Monday and 20 in the other.
Azzi Fudd Found Her Points Inside the Arc
Fudd built her career-high scoring night almost entirely inside the arc, attempting just one 3-pointer against Washington. The pattern has held all season. Through three games, Fudd has taken just 5 shots from beyond the arc and made 1, while shooting 61.1% from the field overall. Her scoring has climbed each time out, from 3 points in the season opener at Indiana to 8 against Minnesota to 12 against the Mystics.
Fudd said the inside-the-arc approach reflects a choice to take what the defense offers rather than settle into the role of a spot-up shooter.
“I’m just reading what the defense and what the game gives me,” Fudd said. “I know I’m a good 3-point shooter. People like to limit me to that, but I’m more than just that, so it’s been nice to just read what’s in our offense with how the defense is playing, and I have incredible teammates that get me open.”
Paige Bueckers said Fudd played without hesitation and got to her pull-up efficiently, the kind of aggressive showing the Wings have looked for from her.
“She was aggressive. She didn’t really hesitate much, and then when she did hesitate one time, we all got on her just to be aggressive and look for her shot,” Bueckers told Dallas Hoops Journal. “But she got to her pull-ups very efficiently, and she was aggressive, and I think that’s what we need from her.”
Awak Kuier said Fudd’s production has tracked her growing comfort, and that her scoring was never in question.
“I think you can tell she’s getting more comfortable, and I think the more games she plays, the more comfortable she’s gonna get,” Kuier told Dallas Hoops Journal. “She’s very talented. I don’t think any of us is worried about her scoring. It’s just more about her being confident in the team.”
Azzi Fudd Carries the Starters’ Tempo
Fudd checked in at the 4:20 mark of the first quarter and hit her first attempt, a basket that ignited a 7-0 run out of the media timeout. The spurt pushed the Wings’ lead to 16-5 and forced a Washington timeout, part of an opening quarter in which Dallas held the Mystics to 9 points, tied for the fewest allowed in any quarter by any team this season.
Fudd said her job off the bench was to extend the intensity the starters had established.
“My goal was just to be aggressive when I got in the game, contribute any way I could,” Fudd said. “Watch what the starters were doing. They started the game off pushing the pace, being aggressive, getting stops, so I wanted to continue that.”
Jose Fernandez Plans to Increase Azzi Fudd’s Minutes
Fernandez has managed Fudd’s workload with her health as the priority since the knee injury cost her a game. After Monday’s performance, he said her comfort level had reached the point where he could expand her role.
“I think everybody was excited to see Azzi and how well she played and how she shot it and how she defended and how she created off the bounce,” Fernandez said. “So I’m glad that now we can continue to increase the minutes. She felt good, and it was good to see her with the comfort level that she played and how her teammates also moved it and found her.”
Fernandez also used Fudd in a lineup alongside Bueckers, Arike Ogunbowale, Maddy Siegrist and Jessica Shepard that bridged the third and fourth quarters, a group he singled out as a turning point that worked at both ends of the floor.
The progress traces in part to the weekend before the game, when the Wings held two practices, their first extended stretch of practice time all season. Fudd had said after Saturday’s session that the value of those days was the chance to play through situations rather than only discuss them.
“Just having more time, more reps, and time to actually go up and down and play through things instead of just talking about it,” Fudd said Saturday. “Sometimes it’s hard to just talk about it. You actually have to go live, play through it, and go through those actions with the different lineups you’re going to see on the court.”
Azzi Fudd Hears Familiar Voices Courtside
Fudd said the night carried added meaning because of supporters seated courtside at College Park Center, where the Wings drew a sellout crowd of 6,251. Among the crowd were her former UConn teammates, Sarah Strong, Ice Brady, and Kelis Fisher, who were seated courtside.
“Every second I could hear her,” Fudd said of Fisher. “But it was amazing to have them. They don’t get too much time off, so the fact that they came down here, showed some support and some love means a lot.”
Fudd also pointed to playing alongside Shepard, who recorded a 16-rebound double-double against Washington, as one of the early rewards of her rookie season.
“It’s been a lot of fun getting to play with a player like Jess that can just do a lot both offensively and defensively,” Fudd said. “I can’t believe it’s only been four games, and I’ve really enjoyed each game, getting more comfortable, learning how she likes to play, her learning my game. But playing with Jess has been incredible.”
