Brian Windhorst Makes Rare LeBron James Comparison For Cooper Flagg After 49-Point Performance

After more than two decades covering the NBA, Brian Windhorst has learned to be careful with comparisons — especially when teenagers are involved. Following Cooper Flagg’s historic performance Thursday night, Windhorst made it clear just how narrow his list truly is.
Flagg’s 49-point outburst against the Charlotte Hornets didn’t just break records. It prompted Windhorst to place the Dallas Mavericks rookie alongside a group that includes only the most transformational young talents the league has seen this century.
“Been covering the NBA for 24 years. I’ve seen three teenagers before — Cooper Flagg — who have been blown away, impressive to me,” Windhorst said. “One was LeBron. One was Luka. And one was Victor Wembanyama.”
Cooper Flagg Delivers a Historic Performance
Flagg’s night was historic by nearly every measure. The 19-year-old finished with 49 points on 20-of-29 shooting, adding 10 rebounds, three assists, and a block in a narrow 123–121 loss. His 49 points were the most ever scored by a teenager in NBA history, surpassing Cliff Robinson’s mark of 45 set in 1980.
With the double-double, Flagg became the sixth rookie ever to record at least 49 points and 10 rebounds — the first since Michael Jordan in 1985. Over the past 40 years, only Flagg and Trae Young have produced a 49-point double-double in their rookie seasons.
The setting added weight. On the same night the Mavericks retired Mark Aguirre’s No. 24 jersey, Flagg broke the franchise’s rookie single-game scoring record — a mark he and Aguirre had previously shared.
By halftime, Flagg already had 25 points, the most he has scored in a half in his career and the most by a teenager since Anthony Edwards in 2021. He followed with a 23-point second quarter, becoming the youngest player in the play-by-play era to score 20 points in a single period.
Through three quarters, Flagg had 40 points, making him the first teenager and first rookie in the play-by-play era to reach that number before the fourth.
Why Brian Windhorst Sees LeBron James
For Windhorst, the comparison to LeBron James isn’t rooted in scoring style, but in overall control of the game.
“When it comes to the way Cooper Flagg can control the game at both ends of the floor, the only one he compares to is LeBron,” Windhorst said.
Windhorst stressed that Flagg’s impact profile at 19 looks different than James’ did at the same age.
“Now, he’s a different game than LeBron because he’s more of a defensive, dominating player than LeBron was as a 19-year-old,” Windhorst said. “LeBron had a more polished scoring game than Cooper does.”
At the same time, Windhorst pointed to one area where Flagg already appears ahead of where James was early in his career.
“Although, I’ll tell you right now, Cooper’s jump shot is better than LeBron’s was at the same age,” Windhorst said.
The Competitiveness That Stood Out
Beyond the records and comparisons, Windhorst said Flagg’s reaction after the game revealed the trait that separates him most.
Despite scoring 49 points, Flagg was visibly upset following the loss — a response Windhorst believes speaks directly to his long-term ceiling.
“What really blows me away about Cooper Flagg — and you saw it in this game — because even though he had 49 points, he was furious when he lost this game,” Windhorst said. “His competitiveness, particularly. His competitiveness defensively.”
That edge has become a defining theme of Flagg’s rookie season. After Thursday’s performance, he is averaging 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.1 assists while carrying one of the league’s heaviest offensive responsibilities for a first-year player.
For Windhorst, the combination of two-way impact, emotional investment, and adaptability is what elevates Flagg into rare territory — not just among rookies, but among teenagers the NBA has ever seen.
