- Expected Departure: The report suggests that Antetokounmpo is expected to be traded by the Bucks following the conclusion of the current season.
The Boston Celtics could pursue a trade for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason, per Sam Amick of The Athletic.
The Celtics are known to be interested and discussed in league circles as potential suitors for Antetokounmpo, who is expected to be traded by the Bucks this offseason.
Antetokounmpo will make $58.5 million next season. He has a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season.
Along with the Celtics, Antetokounmpo has been linked to the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers and Atlanta Hawks, per Amick.
During a recent interview with the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Antetokounmpo brought up Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla’s coaching this season in response to a question about his uncertain future with the Bucks. The future Hall of Famer is a big fan of the way Mazzulla coaches and approaches basketball.
“Like, you saw I talked with coach Joe Mazzulla,” Antetokounmpo told Lori Nickel of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “I said, ‘You had so many opportunities to make excuses, but you didn’t.’ And he said, ‘Oh, they’re good players.’ I said, no. It’s about the mentality that you instilled in your place.”
The Celtics are led by All-Stars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. The two forwards guided Boston to the 2024 NBA championship against the Dallas Mavericks.
Tatum tore his Achilles tendon in the second round of the 2025 playoffs against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden but made a triumphant return this season. The Celtics could win the championship again with Tatum back in the fold alongside Brown.
It’s doubtful Boston would trade Brown or Tatum to acquire Antetokounmpo. However, after the Mavericks traded Luka Dončić to the Lakers last season, nothing can be ruled out in today’s NBA.
A two-time MVP, Antetokounmpo prefers playing for an East Coast team since the East Coast is closer to Greece, per Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report, and Boston is on the East Coast. Antetokounmpo’s wife and kids live in Greece.
