The NBA announced Thursday that Cooper Flagg has been named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month for games played in December, marking the second straight month the Dallas Mavericks forward/guard has earned the honor.

Flagg is now the third Maverick to receive the award in consecutive months, a distinction that underscores both his individual production and the immediate responsibility he has assumed in Dallas’ rotation. Through the first two months of his NBA career, the No. 1 overall pick has consistently operated as a primary option, combining scoring volume with playmaking and defensive impact well beyond typical rookie usage.

Historic Production Anchors December Surge

Across 13 December appearances, Flagg averaged 23.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.2 blocks in 35.6 minutes per game while shooting 51.6% from the field and 80.8% from the free-throw line. His cumulative totals for the month — 306 points, 80 rebounds, 63 assists, 13 steals, and 15 blocks — placed him among elite historical company.

Those numbers made Flagg just the fifth rookie in NBA history to record at least 300 points, 75 rebounds, 50 assists, 10 steals, and 10 blocks in a single month, joining Blake Griffin, LeBron James, Ron Harper, and Larry Bird. The combination of scoring efficiency and all-around involvement has allowed Flagg to impact games in multiple phases, whether initiating offense, attacking in transition, or providing secondary rim protection.

The defining moment of his month came Dec. 15 at Utah, when Flagg erupted for a career-high 42 points while adding seven rebounds, six assists, one steal, and two blocks. At 18 years, 359 days old, he became the youngest player in NBA history to score 40 points in a game and tied Mark Aguirre’s Mavericks rookie record for points in a single contest.

The stat line also placed him alongside Kevin Durant as the only rookies since steals and blocks were officially tracked in 1973–74 to post at least 40 points, seven rebounds, six assists, one steal, and two blocks in a game.

Consistency, Context, and Leaguewide Impact

Flagg’s production did not fade after his breakout night. Two days later against Detroit, he recorded 23 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks, marking the first time since David Robinson in 1989–90 that a rookie accumulated at least 65 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, and five blocks over a two-game span.

On Christmas Day, Flagg delivered another milestone performance, scoring 27 points with six rebounds and five assists against Golden State. He became the first rookie since Pete Maravich in 1970 to post at least 25 points, five rebounds, and five assists on Christmas, joining Maravich and Oscar Robertson as the only rookies to achieve that stat line on the holiday.

The month also highlighted Flagg’s consistency relative to his age. He joined LeBron James and Luka Dončić as the only teenagers in NBA history to record at least 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists in three consecutive games. He finished December as one of eight rookies with at least five 20-5-5 games during the month, with only Robertson, Alvan Adams, Magic Johnson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar recording more such performances. Dončić is the only other teenager to match that output in December.

Drafted first overall in the 2025 NBA Draft out of Duke, Flagg currently ranks first among rookies in total points (652), second in rebounds (218), second in assists (139), second in steals (41), and third in blocks (27). He is the only rookie this season to rank in the top three across all five major statistical categories.

Beyond rookie comparisons, Flagg has also emerged as a reliable late-game option, ranking fifth in the NBA in clutch scoring with 70 points on 47.7% shooting.
