DHJ Quick Take: The Prospect Pairing
- The Dybantsa Dream: Landing the 6.7% chance for the No. 1 overall pick would allow Nico Harrison to pair AJ Dybantsa with Cooper Flagg. This creates a “Dual-Wing” engine where Dybantsa‘s elite three-level scoring serves as the offensive “closer” to Flagg’s generational defensive versatility.
- The Frontcourt Anchor: If Dallas lands in the No. 2 or No. 3 range, the decision between Cameron Boozer and Darryn Peterson becomes a question of identity. Adding Boozer alongside Flagg would arguably give the Mavericks the highest-IQ young frontcourt in the league, while Peterson would offer a dynamic backcourt partner to alleviate pressure on the wings.
- The Defensive Wall: Selecting Caleb Wilson at No. 4 would signal a commitment to a “Length-First” defensive philosophy. A Wilson-Flagg pairing would offer elite rim protection and switchability, effectively turning the American Airlines Center into a nightmare for opposing drives.
- The 8-9 Strategy: With a combined 64% probability of landing at No. 8 or No. 9, the Mavericks must look at “Lead Guard” upside. Kingston Flemings or Mikel Brown Jr. represent the best path toward stabilizing the backcourt long-term, providing the playmaking necessary to maximize Flagg’s transition game.
The Dallas Mavericks know a thing or two about lottery odds.
They were not supposed to land Cooper Flagg. That was a tremendous stroke of fortune. They had a 1.8% chance at landing the first pick, and it happened anyway. Now, the odds for the upcoming lottery are released. The Mavericks lost their tiebreaker with the Pelicans, which gives them a 6.7% chance of landing the No. 1 overall pick.
Could lightning strike twice?
Dallas Mavericks Hoping for More Lottery Luck
Of course, Mavericks fans shouldn’t be counting on the top spot. They also have a 7.0% chance of landing second, a 7.4% chance of landing No. 3, and a 7.8% chance of landing No. 4.
They can’t land No. 5, No. 6, or No. 7. After that, the odds dramatically escalate. The Mavericks have a 32.9% chance of landing eighth, and a 31.1% chance of landing ninth.
If they land a top-4 pick, they may have an easy choice. The Mavericks are lucky to say that Cooper Flagg should be able to play with any of the top choices.
As of this writing, AJ Dybantsa is the presumptive number one pick. He and Flagg could be the best forward duo in the NBA. Dybantsa’s scoring-mindedness could be a perfect fit alongside Flagg’s defensive ability.
The second pick will be either Darryn Peterson or Cameron Boozer. The Mavs can take whoever they like better. If they land No. 3, they’ll take whoever is left. If Dallas lands No. 4 overall, they’ll surely take Caleb Wilson. He and Flagg could be the best defensive duo in the league.
Nobody should blame Mavericks fans for dreaming big. Still, it’s more likely that they’ll land outside of the top 4.
Is there anyone interesting lower in the draft?
Dallas Mavericks Will Add an Intriguing Young Player
Absolutely. The Mavericks have a chance to bolster their backcourt outside of the top-10. Kingston Flemings is the type of lead guard who can play with anyone. Mikel Brown Jr. is the type of plus-sized point guard teams covet.
Alternatively, Dallas could add a versatile wing like Karim Lopez or Yaxel Lendeborg. Flagg will need a long-term frontcourt partner. Dallas could even add a big man like Aday Mara.
Ultimately, Dallas will add a player with potential. The organization surely isn’t banking on another lottery leap. Assuming they fall out of the top four, they’ll have to use their drafting acumen to make the right choice here. Flagg fell into their laps:
That isn’t guaranteed to happen again.
