‘We’ll Know More Later’: Paige Bueckers’ Status Uncertain After Exiting Dallas Wings’ Win Over Los Angeles Sparks

ARLINGTON, Texas — Paige Bueckers exited the Dallas Wings‘ 90-82 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday with just over three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter after hitting her head, and she did not return to close out the game. Her status heading into Monday’s back-to-back against the New York Liberty was unclear as of the postgame press conference.

Wings coach Jose Fernandez said he had not yet received word from the team’s medical staff by the time he met with reporters.

“I don’t have an update,” Fernandez said. “I know she was being evaluated. I went back there to see her, but she’s with our doctors, and we’ll know more in the next couple of hours.”

Fernandez said Dallas’ response in the moments right after the injury — working through a timeout and getting a defensive stop with its leading scorer off the floor — was one positive to take from the sequence.

“I thought the team did a good job coming out of the timeout, responding, getting a stop, and then getting the ball where we wanted it on that side pick-and-roll isolation coming out of the timeout,” Fernandez said. “We’ll know more on Paige later.”

Asked directly about the nature of the injury, Fernandez said he did not have details to share.

“I don’t have any information right now to share,” Fernandez said. “I’ll know more once we talk to the doctors and our sports medicine staff.”

The Play, and Who Closed It Out

Bueckers had carried Dallas’ offense for most of the fourth quarter before exiting. She opened the period with her second three-pointer of the game to put the Wings up 71-63, then scored four points in a 6-4 stretch that pushed the lead back to six, 78-72, with 5:53 to go. She finished with nine of her 25 points in the frame.

With Bueckers unavailable for the final possessions, Arike Ogunbowale took over, closing the game on a personal 4-0 run as Los Angeles never got closer than four points again. Fernandez credited her for stepping into that role.

“I thought Arike was really assertive down the stretch,” he said. “Those baskets, her driving to the basket, were big. I thought she was efficient today as well.”

Bueckers finished the night with 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting, four rebounds and five assists in 32 minutes — her seventh game this season with at least 25 points and five assists, tops in the WNBA.

A Franchise Cornerstone at the Center of a Hot Stretch

The injury comes in the middle of one of Bueckers’ best stretches of the season. Over Dallas’ six-game winning streak — the longest in franchise history — she is averaging 23.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 7.0 assists on 53% shooting and 93.3% from the free-throw line. For the season, she leads the Wings at 20.7 points and 6.3 assists per game.

Any absence would also land at a difficult point on the schedule. Dallas plays its first back-to-back of the season Monday, hosting the Liberty at 7 p.m. CT at College Park Center, then continues through a stretch that includes three games in four days.

When to Expect an Update

Fernandez said the team had already prepared for Monday’s opponent regardless of Bueckers’ availability, having finished its scouting on New York before Sunday’s game even tipped off.

“We already did our film work on New York,” he said. “We had four film sessions on Wednesday, and we practiced for New York that day.”

Dallas won’t hold a shootaround Monday, which is standard for the second game of a back-to-back and removes what’s normally an early public read on a player’s game-day status. That leaves pre-game warmups as the clearest indicator of Bueckers’ availability before anything official comes from the team.

The WNBA’s injury reporting rules also shift for the second game of a back-to-back. Teams are typically required to designate a participation status and identify a specific injury, illness or other reason for any player whose availability may be affected by 5 p.m. local time the day before a game. For the second game of a back-to-back, that deadline moves to 1 p.m. local time on the day of the game — meaning Dallas’ official word on Bueckers is due by early Monday afternoon, ahead of the 7 p.m. tip-off.
