Dallas Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont requested medical data to ensure that Anthony Davis isn’t at risk of getting hurt again before returning from his left calf injury, according to NBA reporter Tim MacMahon of ESPN.

Davis has played in only five games this season.

“Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont has requested medical data indicating that Anthony Davis is not at risk of aggravating his left calf strain before giving a green light for the 10-time All-Star big man to return, sources told ESPN on Wednesday,” MacMahon wrote.

Davis has appeared in just 14 games with the Mavericks since the blockbuster Luka Dončić trade last season. The talented big man is averaging 20.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks per game this season while shooting 52.0% from the field, 27.3% from beyond the arc and 74.2% from the free-throw line.

“He originally targeted his return for Saturday’s road game against the Washington Wizards, but there was a disagreement between Mavs director of health and performance Johann Bilsborough and Davis’ personal medical staff on whether that was prudent, sources said,” MacMahon wrote. “Davis was held out after Dumont sided with Bilsborough, preferring to err on the side of caution, sources said.”

The Mavericks fired Nico Harrison on Tuesday. Many people around the NBA expect Dallas to trade Davis now that Harrison is gone.

Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group represents Davis.

A top 75 player of all time, Davis has played for the New Orleans Pelicans, Los Angeles Lakers and Mavericks. He has made 10 All-Star teams, five All-NBA teams and five All-Defensive teams.

Davis reported to training camp at 268 pounds, according to the roster the Mavericks released in September. That was 15 pounds heavier than what he was listed at the previous season with the Lakers.

Dallas is only 3-8 on the season.
