According to NBA reporters Joe Vardon, Christian Clark and Sam Amick of The Athletic, Anthony Davis has tried to convince the Dallas Mavericks to let him return from his injury and Nico Harrison urged him to before getting fired.

Davis is currently dealing with a left calf strain.

“Multiple league sources said Davis has tried to convince the Mavs to let him return to the court, and Harrison urged him to return, but the team’s medical staff forbade it, citing the potential for a torn Achilles if Davis returned too soon,” Vardon, Clark and Amick wrote.

Davis is 32 years old. He is under contract for $54.1 million this season and $58.5 million for the 2026–27 season. The Chicago native has a player option for the 2027–28 season worth $62.8 million.

A future Hall of Famer, Davis is averaging 20.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.9 blocks per game with the Mavericks, who are 3-8 on the season.

Davis has appeared in just 14 games with Dallas since the blockbuster Luka Dončić trade last season. The big man is averaging 20.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks per contest this season while shooting 52.0% from the field, 27.3% from beyond the arc and 74.2% from the free-throw line.

Davis reported to training camp at 268 pounds, according to the roster the Mavericks released in September. That was 15 pounds heavier than what he was listed at the previous season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

A top 75 player of all time, Davis has played for the New Orleans Pelicans, Lakers and Mavericks. He has made 10 All-Star teams, five All-NBA teams and five All-Defensive teams.

Many people around the NBA expect the Mavericks to trade Davis now that Harrison is gone. Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group represents Davis.
