Former Dallas Mavericks guard Tyus Jones is joining the Denver Nuggets, according to NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN.
Jones began this season with the Orlando Magic. He appeared in 48 games with the Magic before getting traded to the Charlotte Hornets.
After getting traded to the Hornets, Jones was traded to the Mavericks. The Duke product played in eight games with Dallas before getting waived.
Jones now joins the Nuggets, who are a championship contender. Denver won the 2023 championship against the Miami Heat, but the franchise has lost in the second round of the playoffs two years in a row.
The 29-year-old Jones has played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Memphis Grizzlies, Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns, Magic and Mavericks. He has career averages of 7.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game.
The Nuggets are 37-24. They are in fifth place in the Western Conference standings. Jones will play behind All-Star Jamal Murray.
It made no sense for Jones to remain with the Mavericks, who are rebuilding around rookie Cooper Flagg. Jones is better suited to play for a contender like the Nuggets at this stage of his career.
Dallas is in 12th place in the West and will miss the playoffs and play-in tournament this year.
The Nuggets are first in the league in points per game. Tyus Jones is one of the best passers in the game and does a great job of not turning the ball over. It will be intriguing to see how he plays in David Adelman’s offensive system.
