After 25 years at the college level, Jose Fernandez is finally stepping into a new arena.
The newly appointed head coach of the Dallas Wings acknowledged the adjustment ahead but made it clear he is embracing the challenge.
“Yes, I’m a rookie in the W,” Fernandez said with a smile. “But I was coaching professional sports in college, so why not make the leap to the WNBA?”
Fernandez arrives in Dallas after a quarter-century leading the University of South Florida women’s program, where he built one of the more consistent mid-major contenders in the country. The shifting landscape of college athletics, particularly the transfer portal and NIL-driven recruiting, played a role in his decision to leave.
“The change in landscape, not only in women’s college basketball but college athletics,” Fernandez explained. “I was coaching professional sports in college. So this felt like the right time.”
Jose Fernandez Embraces New Chapter with Dallas Wings
Now 54, Fernandez moves to North Texas with his wife, Tonya, and their eight dogs, a logistical challenge he joked may be tougher than drawing up his first WNBA playbook.
“It’s excitement,” he said. “My wife’s been extremely supportive. Now how we’re going to move eight dogs to Dallas, that’s going to be a different story.”
On the court, Fernandez inherits a roster built around franchise cornerstone Paige Bueckers, the reigning Rookie of the Year. He did his homework before formally taking over, spending time with longtime friend and UConn head coach Geno Auriemma to better understand Bueckers’ tendencies.
However, he recently opened up while sending a clear message to the Dallas fanbase.
“Our players are going to play with great joy, great enthusiasm,” Fernandez said in an interview with WFAA. “They’re going to be great representatives of the organization, be involved in the community. Uh, they’re going to play with great passion. There’s not going to ever be a reason for anyone to think that, ‘hey, they just didn’t play hard. They didn’t compete tonight.'”
Dallas Wings Hold No. 1 Pick as Expectations Rise
The Wings enter the season with significant roster questions to address, including frontcourt depth and overall alignment. Still, the organization holds valuable flexibility.
Dallas owns the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft for the second straight year. Unlike 2025, when Bueckers was the clear-cut selection, this year’s class lacks a consensus top choice. Fernandez indicated that the front office has narrowed its evaluation to a short list.
The combination of a new coaching voice, a franchise guard entering her second season, and another top draft asset positions the Wings at a pivotal moment. Fernandez understands the opportunity — and the responsibility — that comes with it.
For him, the leap to the WNBA isn’t just about change. It’s about timing, direction, and building something sustainable in Dallas.
