‘Put Action Behind Our Words’: Paige Bueckers Urges Dallas Wings to Turn Talk Into Results After Fifth Straight Loss

The Dallas Wings entered Sunday with optimism about the franchise’s direction but left College Park Center with another reminder of the gap between words and results. A strong first half unraveled into a 91–78 loss to the Washington Mystics, marking the team’s fifth straight defeat, dropping to 8-24 on the season. For Paige Bueckers, the centerpiece of the Wings’ rebuild, it was a day that began with excitement about the future and ended with an urgent call for execution.
Hours before tipoff, Bueckers reflected on the team’s post-deadline vision, where general manager Curt Miller signaled a commitment to building around the team’s young core and veterans.
“It’s very exciting,” Bueckers said. “I think we have a really good young core. We have great complementary pieces, plus veterans, so we’ve got a mix of both. We’re all excited that the front office is doubling down on what we have here right now.”
Bueckers also saw value in the team’s ability to compete, even during a difficult season, pointing to the growth opportunities that come from playing in close games against playoff-caliber opponents. She believes those reps will pay dividends in future seasons as the roster continues to develop chemistry and learn how to close out wins.
“It’s encouraging from the optimistic side of it — we’re not getting blown out, and we’re competing in every game,” Bueckers said. “We’re getting reps in close games and in pressure situations. A lot of us have never been in these situations before in the W, so it builds confidence, builds trust, and builds continuity. We’re going to be better for it.”
Paige Bueckers Urges a Shift from Conversation to Execution
By the end of the night, the tone had shifted. Dallas led by as many as 13 points in the first half before being outscored 61–37 after halftime, including a 15–4 run by Washington to start the third quarter. When asked about her to the team, Bueckers made clear that the Wings have done enough talking after losses and it’s now about taking action.
“There’s only so much we can talk about,” Bueckers said postgame. “We’ve had these conversations after almost every game, so right now it’s all about action. I think I can be better at setting that tone.”
Asked what it would take to close the gap in tight games, Bueckers was direct.
“Just being about action, not words. We know what to do, so just doing it,” she emphasized.
Bueckers pointed to consistency as a key issue, noting the team’s energy dips after halftime.
“We’re great in transition, but we have to work on our half-court offense, and our intensity has to stay the same throughout the whole game,” Bueckers said.
Head coach Chris Koclanes echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need to keep defensive intensity regardless of offensive performance.
“We have to put 40 minutes together, but I think, when we get stops and can run and play out on the open floor, we’re better, of course,” Koclanes said. “We’ve got to find ways… First off, we need to get more stops. Period. Even when the ball goes through the hoop, we need to still find ways to generate the same type of pace and tempo and keep the ball moving from side to side.
“I think in the third quarter there, you’re taking the ball out of the hoop a lot and then it just kind of slows you down,” he added. “That’s our growth area.”
Koclanes believes the Wings can play harder throughout full games rather than using high energy in short spurts. Avoidable factors, such as officiating or mistakes, negate their effort level at times.
“I think we can play harder,” Koclanes said. “I think we have another level. I think we play hard in spurts, I think we still let things affect us… I think we can play harder more consistently.”
With one of the WNBA’s worst records, Bueckers conveyed the importance of this Wings team to stick together through the challenges. Regardless, action is necessary.
“I think we’re all frustrated with losing, so to continue to stay together through the tough times is important,” Bueckers explained. “Like I said before, we’ve talked about it enough. We just need to put action behind our words.”
Dallas Wings Star is Playing Through a Lingering Back Injury
Bueckers has been managing a back injury since Aug. 5, when she felt tightness while dribbling during a game against the New York Liberty. She briefly left that game for treatment before returning to finish with 21 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
Speaking before Sunday’s matchup with Washington, she said the injury was improving.
“The back is feeling better,” Bueckers said. “It was just like cold muscles, so I’ve been resting, recovering, and getting lots of treatment. I’m feeling good.”
After playing 32 minutes against the Mystics and scoring 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting with three rebounds, three assists, and two steals, she admitted the injury is still a constant factor.
“You kind of get a better handle on it,” Bueckers said. “It’s annoying at times because it’s always there, it’s constant. But like I’ve said, I rest, recover, and get my body ready to go. Adrenaline is a hell of a drug — once the game starts, it kind of goes away, and then you feel it the day after. It’s just something you deal with.”
Bueckers is listed as probable for Tuesday’s nationally televised road game against the Indiana Fever. Over her last five appearances, she has averaged 20.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.8 steals, and 1.6 three-pointers in 32.5 minutes per game. For the season, she is posting 18.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 5.3 assists on 45.9% shooting.
With a month left in the regular season, her message remains unchanged: the foundation is in place, but the Wings must translate it into consistent wins.
