DHJ Quick Take: Friday Takeaways
- Off-Ball Versatility: Head coach Jose Fernandez provided a key schematic insight by outlining a specific Paige Bueckers off-ball package. By utilizing Odyssey Sims, JJ Quinerly, and Lindsay Allen to handle primary playmaking duties, Fernandez aims to leverage Bueckers‘ gravity as a scorer—a tactical shift that matches the vision Curt Miller shared earlier in camp.
- The Defensive Mandate: Paige Bueckers continues to anchor the team’s culture, explicitly stating that defense is the “Day 1 priority.” Her experience in Unrivaled has clearly translated into an elite level of conditioning and vocal leadership, as noted by teammate Rayah Marshall, who called Bueckers one of the most vocal players in drills.
- The Post Rotation: With Jessica Shepard and Awak Kuier still overseas, Zee Spearman and Rayah Marshall are receiving extended looks. Marshall’s focus on “honing her pace” and mental engagement with the WNBA game is a critical development for the Wings‘ frontcourt depth, especially as she learns to operate in the space created by the Bueckers-Fudd backcourt.
- Roster Competition: Amy Okonkwo’s presence as a training camp invitee adds a layer of competitive energy. Her versatility as a shooter and screener makes her a strong candidate for a roster spot, particularly given her previous success as a hardship signing in Dallas. Fernandez‘s refusal to set a rotation this early emphasizes that every practice rep remains a live evaluation.
ARLINGTON, Texas — The Dallas Wings wrapped their fifth practice of training camp Friday, with head coach Jose Fernandez continuing to install offensive and defensive packages while several key players remain overseas finishing out international commitments.
Fernandez, reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year Paige Bueckers, second-year post Rayah Marshall, and training camp invitee Amy Okonkwo each spoke to reporters, along with Dallas Hoops Journal, after practice.
Full interviews are embedded below.
Jose Fernandez
Fernandez pushed back on the idea that a rotation is close to being set, saying it is only practice number five and the staff is nowhere near identifying a top eight, nine, or 10. He emphasized the versatility of the roster and said making sure every player on site knows the team’s offensive and defensive packages has been the staff’s priority while others remain overseas.
He also outlined a Bueckers off-ball package when a secondary ball handler is on the court, discussed Zee Spearman‘s expanded look at the four and the five with several posts not yet in camp, and addressed what he needs from veteran Li Yueru heading into the season.
Paige Bueckers
Bueckers said her leadership voice has grown organically in year two after a full season in the league and an offseason spent competing in Unrivaled. She emphasized that defense is a Day 1 priority for the group and credited her Unrivaled experience for carrying over the intensity and conditioning required at the WNBA level.
She also discussed her willingness to take on whatever role the team needs on a given night, the importance of accountability across the roster, and what she has seen from Aziaha James through the first week of camp.
Rayah Marshall
Marshall talked about honing her pace as a young post player and learning to engage mentally with the speed of the WNBA game. She credited Alysha Clark and Alanna Smith as the veterans who have been most helpful to her in camp, and noted that Bueckers has been one of the most vocal players in drills despite being in her own second season.
She also discussed how the Bueckers–Fudd backcourt is creating one-on-one touches for the bigs, and walked through what Fernandez asked of her in their first phone conversation ahead of camp.
Amy Okonkwo
Okonkwo, who signed a late-season hardship contract with the Wings last year and ended last season scoring 20 points in a win over the Phoenix Mercury, said the energy of a full training camp has been noticeably different from the injury-affected stretch that ended her previous stint in Dallas.
She credited veterans like Odyssey Sims for setting the tone and said her focus is on doing whatever is asked of her, highlighting her versatility as a shooter, post scorer, and screener. Okonkwo also outlined the mentality she is carrying into her competition for a roster spot, one she said has not changed from her hardship opportunity a year ago to this training camp invitation.
The Wings continue training camp ahead of their two-game preseason slate, with the regular season set to tip-off May 9.
