The Dallas Mavericks need a new GM after firing Nico Harrison and many NBA fans believe franchise legend Dirk Nowitzki would be a great choice.

However, Nowitzki told Sports Illustrated that he’s not interested in becoming the Mavericks’ new GM.

“I don’t think the GM role is something I’m considering right now,” Dirk Nowitzki said. “I always thought that when I retired, I’d immediately move into management with the Mavericks. However, the longer I was out of the business after my playing career ended, the less interesting it became to me. I think it’s an incredibly intense job, 24/7, all year round. When the season is over for players and coaches and they take a break, the work for GMs just keeps going with the draft, free agency, and trade deadlines. It’s an absolute full-time job that I couldn’t imagine doing right now.

“I like my life the way it is right now. I enjoy having things going on with my roles at Prime and the FIBA Players’ Committee, but I also still have plenty of time for my family and children. That’s why I don’t see a GM role in my immediate future.”

The Mavericks didn’t consult Nowitzki before trading Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers last season. Nowitzki doesn’t have a big role with the Dallas franchise at the moment.

The Mavericks stunningly traded Dončić to the Lakers for Anthony Davis and Max Christie. The blockbuster trade was spearheaded by Harrison, who no longer wanted to build around Dončić.

Harrison was fired earlier this season.

Dallas missed the 2025 playoffs after making the NBA Finals in 2024. The organization got lucky, though, by winning the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery. Harrison drafted Cooper Flagg with the first pick, giving the Mavericks three (Flagg, Kyrie Irving, Davis) number one draft picks.

The Mavericks haven’t won a championship since Nowitzki guided the franchise to the 2011 title against the Miami Heat. Dončic and Irving couldn’t lead Dallas past the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals.

It will be fascinating to see if Flagg wins a championship with the Mavericks one day.
