The Golden State Warriors are hesitant to trade for Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr., according to NBA reporter Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area.

The Warriors remain cautious with their future draft picks.

Jonathan Kuminga becomes trade-eligible on January 15. The Warriors are expected to trade the swingman before the trade deadline, which is on February 5.

Kuminga signed a two-year, $48.5 million deal with Golden State to end his restricted free agency last offseason. The second year of the deal, which is a team option, is designed for Kuminga’s next team to rip up and construct a new contract next offseason.

The Nets acquired Porter Jr. from the Denver Nuggets last offseason. MPJ is averaging 25.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game for Brooklyn this season while shooting 49.0% from the field, 39.7% from beyond the arc and 83.3% from the free-throw line.

Porter Jr. is making $38.3 million this season. He will make $40.8 million next season in the final year of his contract.

The Nets are only 11-25. They are in 13th place in the Eastern Conference standings. Porter Jr., one of the most gifted shooters and scorers in the NBA, is better suited to play for a contender at this stage of his career.

Golden State is 21-19. Stephen Curry and Co. are in eighth place in the West. The Warriors haven’t gotten past the second round of the playoffs since winning the 2022 championship against the Boston Celtics.

The 27-year-old Porter Jr. doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract. He helped the Nuggets win the 2023 championship against the Miami Heat and holds career averages of 17.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game with the Nuggets and Nets.
