The Golden State Warriors may keep Jonathan Kuminga now after the Jimmy Butler injury, according to NBA reporter Anthony Slater of ESPN.

Butler will miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL.

“Multiple team sources have described it as less likely Jonathan Kuminga is moved following Jimmy Butler’s right ACL tear,” Slater wrote. “Prior to that injury, Kuminga was a $22.5 million wing rotting on the bench, having not seen the floor for 16 straight games. Without Butler, he’s back in the mix, scoring 30 points in 30 bench minutes before the injury. There’s internal conversation that he’d get another crack at minutes post-deadline — if he’s still around. That has yet to be determined, though.”

Kuminga has demanded a trade from the Warriors, who don’t have to honor the trade demand since Kuminga doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract.

Kuminga signed a two-year, $48.5 million deal with the Warriors to end his restricted free agency last offseason. The second year of the deal is a team option.

Kuminga has appeared in 20 games this season. He’s averaging 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 45.4% from the field, 32.1% from beyond the arc and 74.2% from the free-throw line.

Kuminga believes his growth has been stunted by Steve Kerr and the Warriors, sources told DallasHoopsJournal. Kerr and Kuminga don’t have a good relationship.

The Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Lakers are interested in trading for Kuminga, sources said. The 2026 NBA trade deadline is February 5 at 3 p.m. ET.

Kuminga holds career averages of 12.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. He won the 2022 championship with the Warriors, who are 26-22 on the season. They are in eighth place in the Western Conference standings.
