DHJ Quick Take: Wings vs. Lynx Preview
- The Return of Fudd: Azzi Fudd has been officially cleared for her home debut after a “precautionary” absence Tuesday. She will be the first guard off the bench tonight, providing a vital floor-spacing threat for a Dallas team that shot just 15.4% from deep in their home opener.
- The Blueprint for Bueckers: Jose Fernandez has issued a direct challenge to Paige Bueckers to increase her “scoring aggression.” Despite becoming the fastest Wings player to reach 200 career assists (38 games), the staff wants her to be more assertive in isolation and transition.
- The No. 1 vs. No. 2 Showcase: This matchup features the top two picks of the 2026 WNBA Draft. While Fudd returns for Dallas, Minnesota’s Olivia Miles arrives as a focal point of the Wings’ scouting report, with Fernandez highlighting her “elite court vision” in the pick-and-roll.
- A “Surreal” Reunion: This game is a carousel of reunions. Alanna Smith and Jessica Shepard face their former Lynx teammates for the first time, while Coach Fernandez faces his former USF star, Courtney Williams.
- Tactical Correction: After being out-rebounded and outscored in the second half by Atlanta, the Wings’ primary focus is pace and spacing. Dallas currently leads the league in fast-break points (17.0 PPG) and must maintain that tempo to disrupt Cheryl Reeve’s disciplined system.
ARLINGTON, Texas — The Dallas Wings host the Minnesota Lynx on Thursday night in the second game of a three-game homestand at College Park Center, with rookie Azzi Fudd cleared to make her home debut after missing Tuesday’s loss to the Atlanta Dream.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT on Prime, with Michael Grady, LaChina Robinson, and Kayla Grey on the call. The game also streams on Prime.
Thursday’s contest marks the second home game of the Jose Fernandez era in Dallas. The first-year head coach opened the season with a 107-104 road win over the Indiana Fever before dropping the home opener 77-72 to Atlanta. The Wings now face one of the league’s most established programs under head coach Cheryl Reeve, whose 47-12 all-time regular season record against the Wings stands as one of the most lopsided coaching marks in WNBA history.

Game Status Report
Dallas Wings: Rookie guard Azzi Fudd was listed as questionable with a right knee injury but has been cleared to play after going through Thursday’s shootaround. Fernandez confirmed Fudd will come off the bench as the first guard in the rotation. The No. 1 overall pick of the 2026 WNBA Draft missed Tuesday’s home opener loss after being downgraded from probable to out hours before tip-off.
Minnesota Lynx: All-Star forward Napheesa Collier is OUT with a left ankle injury. Forward Dorka Juhász is OUT with a right foot injury. The Lynx will lean on Kayla McBride, Natasha Howard, Courtney Williams, and rookie point guard Olivia Miles to anchor the rotation in Collier’s absence.
Azzi Fudd Cleared to Play, Set for Home Debut
Fudd told reporters at her pregame media availability that her right knee feels “great” and that she is excited to make her home debut.
“Yeah, the knee feels great. I’m excited to play tonight,” Fudd said.
Fudd missed Tuesday’s home opener after being downgraded from probable to out hours before tip-off. She participated in the Wings’ walkthrough and got shots up at College Park Center on Wednesday, then went through Thursday’s shootaround before being cleared. Fernandez plans to use her as the first guard off the bench, with no minutes restriction in place.
“I’m looking forward to her being the first guard off the bench tonight. Again, making sure we find her in transition and then running some half-court options for her to get the basketball,” Fernandez said. “We’ll see how she feels when that first rotation comes up.”
Asked whether the Wings would limit Fudd’s minutes, Fernandez said the rotation would be governed by feel and flow.
“I think it’s going to be based on how she feels and how the flow of the game is going,” Fernandez said.
Fudd made her WNBA debut Saturday in the Wings’ 107-104 road win over the Indiana Fever, scoring 3 points on her first WNBA 3-pointer in 18 minutes off the bench. She joins reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year Paige Bueckers in a Wings backcourt that has built one of the league’s most marketable young cores.
Olivia Miles, Paige Bueckers Headline Young Backcourt Showcase
Lynx rookie point guard Olivia Miles, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft, has emerged as Reeve’s primary playmaker. Wings personnel singled her out at Wednesday’s practice availabilities, with Smith, Shepard, and Fernandez all previewing the challenge of slowing her down.
Smith described Miles as “a really dynamic point guard” who “distributes really well.” Shepard called her a “special player getting to the rim” and emphasized containing her in ball screens. Fernandez specifically pointed to Miles’ “court vision” and her ability to “spray it all over the place” out of the pick and roll.
“Great vision. Great court vision. She makes really good decisions,” Fernandez said at his pregame media availability. “We’ve got to do a great job stopping her in transition because she gets downhill with her right hand. But if she sprays it out, that ball moves.”
Bueckers comes into Thursday’s matchup off a franchise milestone. The reigning Rookie of the Year passed 200 career assists in just 38 career games during Tuesday’s home opener loss, the fastest any Wings player has reached the mark. Fernandez has placed scoring aggression at the front of his message for Bueckers entering Thursday, particularly on isolations and in transition.
“That’s what I talked to her about today. I think she’s gotta be a lot more aggressive, especially on isolations and in transition, and her shot attempts increasing, but it’s about finding the right balance,” Fernandez told Dallas Hoops Journal Wednesday. “She knows. I mean, she’s fine.”
Dallas Wings Look to Apply Atlanta Loss Lessons Against Disciplined Minnesota Defense
The Wings split their opening two games of the 2026 season, beginning with the road win at Indiana before falling 77-72 to Atlanta in the home opener. Dallas led 41-38 at halftime against Atlanta before being outscored 39-31 in the second half. The Dream won the rebounding battle 44-34, with 11 offensive rebounds turning into 16 second-chance points. The Wings shot just 4-of-26 from 3-point range.
Fernandez identified ball movement, pace, and spacing as the top corrections coming into Thursday.
“It got sticky. We just went to the first available option, and they made us do that,” Fernandez said. “We’ve got to play with pace. For one reason or another, we came back home and those three exhibition games — analytics tell you a lot and measurable devices do too — we didn’t play with the same pace that we played with in those three games. Our spacing was a little bit off, too. Hopefully that’s rectified and can change tonight.”
Dallas leads the WNBA in fast-break points at 17.0 per game through the opening two games. Arike Ogunbowale, Jessica Shepard, and Odyssey Sims each average 4.5 in that category. Shepard’s 6.0 assists per game ranks second among all WNBA forwards behind Atlanta’s Alyssa Thomas.
Alanna Smith and Jessica Shepard Face Former Team in Minnesota
Smith and Shepard each face Minnesota for the first time since joining the Wings in free agency this offseason. Both played for the Lynx during the team’s 34-10 regular season and WNBA Semifinals run in 2025. Fernandez said he has leaned on both for feedback on the Minnesota system entering Thursday’s matchup, while acknowledging the Lynx have undergone roster turnover.
“They give feedback on their own, but every year is different. It’s a totally different Minnesota team. With Natisha Hiedeman out, Courtney moving over to another spot, Carlton not there — it’s a different group,” Fernandez said. “Some things they do offensively and defensively change because of that.”
Fernandez also coached former Lynx guard Courtney Williams at South Florida for four years.
“I’m sure she’s going to come down and talk some shit to me on the sideline, so we’ll see how I take that,” Fernandez said. “But no, I’m really proud of her. She’s been truly amazing to me and my family. It’s going to be surreal because I had an unbelievable time coaching her for four years.”
Smith, who will likely draw a perimeter matchup against the Lynx wings, has been a defensive anchor through two games. Fernandez said Smith’s offensive numbers need to climb but credited her competitiveness and willingness to do the dirty work.
“When you look at statistics, you’re probably going, ‘Okay, she’s got to shoot the ball a lot better.’ She’s got to stay out of foul trouble. Those are two things,” Fernandez said. “She’s going to have to start knocking down some of those shots, but she understands that. She takes pride in that. She’s a competitor. We need Alanna to continue to defend, rebound, finish around the rim, and knock down open shots.”
Series History and Milestones
Minnesota leads the all-time regular-season series 57-21 and holds a 25-14 advantage on Dallas home courts. The Lynx have won 8 of the last 10 meetings dating to 2023. The Wings’ last win in the series came on Aug. 30, 2024, a 94-76 home decision in Arlington. Reeve enters Thursday at 47-12 all-time against the Wings, one of the most one-sided records by any coach against any opponent in WNBA history.
Bueckers entered Thursday off a Wings franchise record for fastest to 200 career assists (38 games) following Tuesday’s home opener loss. Ogunbowale, who has logged 12 or more points in 10 of her last 11 games dating back to July 22, 2025, has posted back-to-back 20-point performances to open the 2026 season.
The Wings’ May 9 opener at Indiana on ABC averaged 2.5 million viewers, the second-most-watched WNBA regular-season game ever on ESPN networks. Thursday’s Prime broadcast carries the matchup into another national window.
