Dallas Wings vs. Atlanta Dream Postgame Interviews: Arike Ogunbowale, Awak Kuier & Jose Fernandez (May 12, 2026)

DHJ Quick Take: Dallas Wings Postgame Takeaways vs. Atlanta Dream

  • The Reese Variable: Jose Fernandez identified the 11 offensive rebounds (8 from Angel Reese) as the primary differentiator. He noted that despite holding Atlanta to 37% shooting, the second-chance scoring gap neutralized Dallas’ defensive effort.
  • Tactical Screen-Offs: Fernandez provided a breakdown of Atlanta’s late-game strategy, specifically how the Dream used screens to move Paige Bueckers off the Rhyne Howard assignment to generate an interior and-one.
  • Stagnant Ball Movement: Arike Ogunbowale and Fernandez both pointed to a lack of “second actions.” After a record-setting opener, the Wings’ ball movement “stuck” against Atlanta’s perimeter length, resulting in a 4-of-26 night from deep.
  • The European Influence: Awak Kuier (team-high +9) offered unique insight into her quick acclimation, citing the “European influence” of Fernandez’s offensive system as a key factor in her comfort level after two seasons away from the WNBA.
  • Accountability Shift: In his first loss as head coach, Fernandez emphasized “organizational accountability,” refusing to pin the result on specific variables while calling for a short-term memory ahead of the Minnesota Lynx matchup.

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Dallas Wings dropped their home opener 77-72 to the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday night at a sold-out College Park Center, undone by 11 offensive rebounds, a 4-of-26 night from 3-point range, and a 13-point fourth quarter.

Allisha Gray led the Dream with 26 points, Jordin Canada added 19 points and 5 assists, and Angel Reese finished with a 12-point, 16-rebound double-double that included 8 offensive boards. Head coach Jose Fernandez, Arike Ogunbowale, and Awak Kuier met with reporters following the loss.

Fernandez addressed Atlanta’s 11 offensive rebounds and the second-chance scoring gap, the Wings’ ball movement issues that produced an uncharacteristic first half offensively, the two late-clock 3-pointers from Gray that effectively decided the game, Atlanta’s defensive scheme to screen Paige Bueckers off Rhyne Howard down the stretch, the value the second unit provided in pushing the Wings to a 41-38 halftime lead, organizational accountability after the first loss of his tenure, and the quick turnaround to Thursday’s home matchup against the Minnesota Lynx.

Ogunbowale, who scored a team-high 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting in 35 minutes, discussed Atlanta’s 6-0 run to open the fourth quarter as the game’s turning point, the Dream’s perimeter length and physicality disrupting the Wings’ first actions, her partnership with Bueckers continuing to develop, the leadership group of veterans guiding the team, and the message after a difficult shooting night.

Kuier, in her first home game back with the franchise after two seasons away, addressed playing in front of the home crowd for the first time since her return, the comfort level in Fernandez’s European-influenced system, Atlanta’s physicality forcing the Wings into a passive posture at times, and the locker room’s response after absorbing the loss.
