DHJ Quick Take: The Space City Fallout
- The Lakers’ Depth Trap: It is a staggering failure for the Rockets to be down 3-1 against a Lakers squad missing Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. While LeBron James continues to defy age, Houston’s inability to capitalize on a shorthanded opponent suggests the Kevin Durant experiment has hit a structural ceiling.
- The Distressed Asset Market: Durant remains an elite scorer, but his absence during this critical stretch has fueled the narrative of him being a “distressed asset.” For the Miami Heat, who are stuck on the “mediocirty treadmill,” buying low with a package centered on Andrew Wiggins is a mechanical necessity to maximize the Bam Adebayo era.
- The Hometown Hero Hook: The Washington Wizards have built a roster of high-risk, high-reward veterans like Trae Young and Anthony Davis. Bringing Durant home to D.C. fits their aggressive “reclamation” strategy, though any deal would likely require moving a cornerstone like an unhappy Davis.
- The Golden State Reunion: A return to the Warriors to pair with Stephen Curry is the ultimate “full circle” move. With Jimmy Butler currently sidelined by injury, a clean swap allows Golden State to recapture their championship magic while giving Houston a veteran leader to stabilize their young core.
The 2025-26 NBA playoffs have been a disaster for the Houston Rockets.
They’re down 3-1 to the Los Angeles Lakers. That would be bad enough on its own, but the Lakers haven’t even been at full strength. Given that neither Luka Dončić nor Austin Reaves suited up to contribute, it’s particularly concerning.
Granted, Kevin Durant hasn’t been available either. His absence has partly fueled trade rumors. This situation is hard to read, but it’s possible that the Rockets will be looking to move Durant after just one season.
If so, here are three teams that should pursue him.
Miami Heat
The Heat often find their way into these rumors.
Yet, they happen to be a perfect suitor for Durant. This is a team at a crossroads. They’re on the mediocrity treadmill. The best thing Miami could do is arguably rebuild, but this organization seldom takes that route.
So, why not buy low on a distressed asset? Andrew Wiggins and a first-round pick could be enough to get a deal done. The Heat do have some talent, but they’re light on half-court scoring after Tyler Herro (and, at times, Bam Adebayo). Using Adebayo as a playmaking hub with Durant and Herro on the perimeter could be a recipe for success.
Washington Wizards
Did someone mention distressed assets?
The Wizards have made a habit of collecting them lately. They acquired Trae Young when nobody wanted him. They landed Anthony Davis despite his durability concerns. Some critics questioned those moves, but it would be fair to say that they paid a fraction of what those players would typically cost.
They could go the same route with Durant. Moreover, he’s a hometown hero who’s been linked to Washington several times. It’s hard to know exactly how a deal would look, unless a seemingly unhappy Anthony Davis is on the table, but it’s another situation to keep an eye on.
Golden State Warriors
Sometimes, it’s best to stick with the devil you know.
Durant’s divorce from the Warriors felt acrimonious. Yet, life hasn’t been easier for either side since his departure. The Warriors won one more title, but they’ve faded into obscurity since. Durant seems to struggle to fit in wherever he goes.
Meanwhile, he’s still an elite scorer. Stephen Curry is still a historically great shooter. They could recapture the magic. Best of all, an injured Jimmy Butler and some draft capital make for a clean trade.
Unless the Rockets stage an improbable comeback, it’s something they’ll have to consider.
