As the Los Angeles Lakers prepare for their first full season with Luka Dončić as their franchise centerpiece, attention is already turning toward what a long-term contract extension might look like.

Dončić, acquired in a blockbuster trade with the Dallas Mavericks last season, is eligible to sign a new deal starting August 2. While no agreement is imminent, several league insiders expect the All-NBA guard to pursue a specific structure that prioritizes flexibility and financial upside.

“The two-plus-one structure is the smartest move for a player in Luka’s position,” one veteran NBA agent told FastbreakJournal.com. “It gives him the flexibility to hit that 10-year mark when he can sign a supermax. If I had to guess, that’s what I expect him to do. That’s what I’d advise.”

A contract structured as a three-year deal with a player option for 2028–29 would align with Dončić’s service timeline, allowing him to hit unrestricted free agency with 10 years of NBA experience. At that point, he would be eligible to sign a five-year, 35% maximum contract projected to extend through 2033.

A Western Conference salary cap expert echoed that view.

“From the perspective of maximizing earning potential, the two-plus-one structure is the most lucrative long-term for Luka,” the expert said. “That gives him the best earning potential. After losing a ton of money because of the trade, this is a great option.”

Dončić averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists in 50 games last season and has embraced his new role in Los Angeles. He has taken an active role in offseason recruiting and has undergone a dramatic body transformation ahead of the 2025–26 campaign.

While the timing and exact structure of Dončić’s next deal remain to be finalized, the growing consensus is that a three-plus-one framework would give both sides security and Dončić the leverage to cash in when he reaches the decade mark in league service.
