A source told DallasHoopsJournal.com on Wednesday that NBA star Luka Dončić was expected to sign an extension with the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason.

It appears Dončić has already verbally agreed to an extension, as Slovenian website Sportklub is reporting that the Lakers and Dončić have agreed to a four-year, $229 million extension.

The extension can become official on August 2.

“The American media speculated that Luka, who has been sculpting his body in recent weeks, losing several kilograms and reducing his body fat percentage, might be delaying signing a new contract since September,” Martin Pavcnik of Sportklub wrote. “There were even hints that he might wait until next summer, when he would be a completely free player and available to all clubs. But it seems that the uncertainty will soon be over. Dončić is said to have agreed to a four-year extension worth 229 million US dollars.”

The Lakers acquired Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks last season. Dončić recruited Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart to Los Angeles this offseason. Ayton was bought out by the Portland Trail Blazers, while Smart was bought out by the Washington Wizards.

One of the best players in the NBA, Dončić appeared in 28 games with the Lakers last season. The five-time All-Star averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists, 1.6 steals and 0.4 blocks.

The Lakers faced the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the 2025 playoffs and lost in five games. Dončić averaged 30.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.6 blocks in the five-game series.

A future Hall of Famer, Dončić has been working hard on his body this offseason. The 26-year-old has lost a lot of weight after being out of shape last season.

The Lakers are expected to start Dončić, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, LeBron James and Ayton next season.
