Mavericks Add Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson and Quentin Grimes to Injury Report Before Hawks Matchup

Dallas Mavericks injury update: Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson questionable; Quentin Grimes doubtful for Monday’s matchup against the Atlanta Hawks.

ATLANTA—The Dallas Mavericks have updated their injury report ahead of Monday night’s game against the Atlanta Hawks, adding key players Kyrie Irving and Quentin Grimes. Irving is listed as questionable due to illness, while Grimes is doubtful and dealing with an illness. The team is set to play on the second night of a back-to-back following a 123-118 overtime loss against the Miami Heat on Sunday.

This update compounds the team’s existing injury concerns, with Luka Dončić (right wrist sprain) and Danté Exum (right wrist surgery) already ruled out. Earlier in the day, Klay Thompson, who scored 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds against Miami, was also added to the injury report as questionable due to a left plantar fascia injury. Thompson has been averaging 13.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists this season, shooting 36.8% from beyond the arc.

Irving has been a pivotal contributor this season, averaging 24.1 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.4 rebounds over 16 games. In Sunday’s overtime loss to the Miami Heat, he led the team with 27 points and 6 assists.

Grimes has provided support off the bench, averaging 6.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 16 games, including 4 points and 7 rebounds against Miami. He’s filled in the starting role in Dončić’s place while bringing aggressive on-ball defense and another shooting threat to complement playmakers.

With Dončić and Exum sidelined and Irving, Grimes, and Thompson potentially absent, the Mavericks’ depth will be significantly tested.

Naji Marshall, who contributed 20 points off the bench against Miami, along with Jaden Hardy, may be called upon to fill the void. Additionally, Spencer Dinwiddie will be expected to take on a more prominent role. Dinwiddie has averaged 4.5 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game this season.

P.J. Washington has been a significant part of the Mavericks’ offense without Dončić in the lineup as it is, but potentially playing without Thompson, he would take on even greater responsibility. He’s averaging 23.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in three games played without Dončić, with 21 points and 10 rebounds against Miami.

At 9-8 entering this game, the Mavericks risk falling back to .500 with a loss against the Hawks, led by Trae Young. The team’s ability to navigate these injuries will be crucial as they aim to conclude their road trip on a positive note.
