DALLAS — Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Darrell Armstrong was arrested early Saturday morning following an incident where he allegedly assaulted someone with a firearm, resulting in being charged with Aggravated Assault.
The Dallas Police Department confirmed to DallasHoopsJournal.com that officers responded to a call on Feb. 15 at approximately 3:45 a.m. Additional information provided included the suspect hitting the victim with a gun and threatening to shoot them. The suspect and victim are known to each other, and Dallas First Responders treated the victim at the scene.
“On Feb. 15, 2025, at about 3:45 a.m., officers responded to a call for service in the 1000 block of Ross Ave.,” Dallas PD confirmed to DallasHoopsJournal.com. “The preliminary investigation determined the suspect and victim were in an argument when the suspect hit the victim with a gun and threatened to shoot them. The suspect, 56-year-old Darrell Armstrong, was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault. DFR responded and treated the victim at the scene. The suspect and victim are known to one another. This remains an ongoing investigation.”
The Mavericks shared a statement with DallasHoopsJournal.com about the matter, stating that Armstrong has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings. The matter is currently under legal review, so the organization will not comment further.
"The Dallas Mavericks are aware of an incident involving a member of our staff and are gathering all relevant information surrounding the incident,” the Mavericks wrote in a statement. “We take this matter seriously. The employee has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings. This matter is currently under review by the appropriate legal authorities. Due to this fact, we will allow the legal process to run its course, and we will refrain from further comment while proceedings are ongoing."
Armstrong is in his 10th season as an assistant coach with the Mavericks, having joined the coaching staff during the 2008-09 NBA season. Before transitioning to coaching, he played 14 seasons in the NBA, with stints in Orlando Magic, New Orleans Pelicans (formerly known as the Hornets), Indiana Pacers, New Jersey Nets, and Dallas Mavericks.
In 1999, Armstrong received the NBA's Sixth Man Award and Most Improved Player Award and was a member of the Mavericks’ 2006 NBA Finals roster.
