Mavericks' Luka Dončić Remains Out, Daniel Gafford Faces Uncertain Injury Status Against Heat

Daniel Gafford’s status is uncertain for the Mavericks vs. Heat matchup due to a shoulder injury. How will Dallas plan to adjust in his potential absence?

MIAMI — The Dallas Mavericks may be without Daniel Gafford when they take on the Miami Heat on Sunday. He’s been a steady contributor this season but is listed as questionable with left shoulder soreness. Luka Dončić (right wrist sprain) and Danté Exum (right wrist surgery) remain out.

Gafford’s potential absence would impact the Mavericks’ frontcourt depth as they build on a four-game winning streak. The 6-foot-10 center played a significant role in Dallas’ 123-120 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Friday. He scored 13 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and added 3 steals. His energy on both ends of the floor was pivotal in helping the Mavericks get a needed victory in NBA Cup group play but also to avenge their earlier loss to Denver.

Gafford has been a consistent presence for the Mavericks this season, averaging 12.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks across 16 games. His ability to finish around the rim, protect the paint, and contribute in transition has made him a valuable piece of Dallas’ rotation, especially in the absence of Dončić.

Adjusting Without Luka

The Mavericks have leaned heavily on their depth during Dončić’s absence, and Gafford has been an essential component. He recently highlighted the importance of maintaining focus and executing the team’s principles when key players are unavailable.

“Just paying attention to detail a lot more,” Gafford said about playing without Dončić. “You’ve got to be near perfect when it comes to offense, but honestly, just stay the same as when he was here—taking care of business, having good spacing, and making sure the right guys have the ball in their hands.”

Dallas has done just that, achieving four consecutive wins behind balanced scoring and improved chemistry. Seven Mavericks scored in double figures against Denver, with Naji Marshall leading the way with 26 points. Gafford’s contributions inside have helped steady the team, especially in tight games, whether he’s serving as an interior play finisher, or taking advantage of a mismatch with a quick post touch.

Gafford’s Development and Role

This season has marked a step forward for Gafford, averaging career highs in points and rebounds. He credits the team’s trust and the increased opportunities he’s been given within head coach Jason Kidd’s system.

“I’m just getting better as the days go by,” Gafford said. “It’s about having patience and trying to expand my offensive game to make more plays. Teams are blitzing and switching more, so I’m figuring out how to make the right passes and take advantage of mismatches.”

Gafford’s continued growth within the Mavericks’ system has been a bright spot for the organization, which has also seen strong performances from its supporting cast. Without Dončić, players like Quentin Grimes, Jaden Hardy, and Spencer Dinwiddie have stepped up in larger roles, contributing to Dallas’ success, but P.J. Washington, Naji Marshall, and Grimes have taken their games to impressive heights in general.

“Everyone’s more in tune with the offensive and defensive schemes now,” Gafford said of the team’s growth. “The chemistry is getting better, and we’re figuring out ways to improve on the fly.”

A Key Test Against the Heat

The matchup against the Heat presents another challenge for Dallas, especially if Gafford cannot play. Dereck Lively II is coming off a performance with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks against the Nuggets in 20 minutes of action. While Lively was recently moved into the starting lineup, he’d be needed in a greater capacity if Gafford is cannot play. Other center options include Dwight Powell or going small with Maxi Kleber or P.J. Washington.

Miami boasts a strong interior presence led by Bam Adebayo, whose combination of size, skill, and defensive versatility can disrupt opposing offenses. The Mavericks must rely on their depth and versatility to overcome not having Dončić.

Dallas enters the game at 9-7 and remains alive in the NBA Cup race. Sunday’s contest marks a crucial opportunity to solidify their position. While the team has shown resilience in recent games, Gafford’s potential absence would pressure the Mavericks’ frontcourt to step up even more.

The Heat faces a potentially notable absence of its own. Jimmy Butler could not participate in Saturday’s practice and is considered questionable to play on Sunday.
