Miami Heat Trade Proposal Lands Ja Morant In Swap With Memphis Grizzlies

NBA executives are widely bracing for a relatively quiet trade deadline. Around the league, the prevailing belief is that the Atlanta Hawks–Washington Wizards Trae Young deal may ultimately stand as the most consequential move made before February 5.
That expectation tracks with recent market behavior. The Hawks’ modest return for Trae Young reinforced the reality of a buyer’s market, one in which teams are reluctant to sell premium talent at depressed prices. In such conditions, activity often slows rather than accelerates.
Still, one name continues to loom over the deadline: Ja Morant. The Memphis Grizzlies have been persistently linked to trade conversations involving their former franchise centerpiece. If Memphis does decide to move Morant, the return is unlikely to resemble what his value once commanded.
Here is one framework that would send Morant to the Miami Heat.

Why the Memphis Grizzlies Do the Deal
At this stage, there is a growing argument that Memphis benefits simply from turning the page on Morant, regardless of the package. His trade value has eroded, and his continued presence increasingly feels misaligned with the Grizzlies’ broader direction. From that perspective, clarity itself carries value.
If Atlanta was unable to extract a first-round pick for Young, Memphis cannot reasonably expect one for Morant under current conditions. In that context, this return is defensible. Where the Hawks landed a proven young contributor in Corey Kispert, the Grizzlies would instead take a swing on upside, acquiring two younger, less established pieces.
Nikola Jović appeared, not long ago, to be a long-term rotation fixture in Miami. However, his role has diminished, with his minutes dropping from 25.1 per game to 20.1, suggesting a loss of trust from head coach Eric Spoelstra. Jakučionis, meanwhile, remains largely untested at the NBA level. The 19-year-old was viewed by some evaluators as a potential lottery talent before sliding to Miami at No. 20.
For Memphis, that combination of cost control and developmental upside may be as realistic as the market allows.
Why the Miami Heat Do the Deal
If the Heat are interested in Morant, they’ll not need to keep Jakučionis. They’ll be committing to at least a few seasons with Morant at the 1, which will impede the rookie’s development. The question is this:
Should they commit to Morant?
There’s no easy answer. Morant’s on-court talent can’t be questioned. His production has waned this year, but he’s not so far removed from unquestionable superstar status. The problems with Morant stem from injuries and off-court drama.
If any team is equipped to handle off-court drama, it’s Miami. This team’s vaulted culture has proven itself time and again over the years. Perhaps the Heat is the right organization to get Morant on track.
There’s risk here. If Jović or Jakučionis hit their ceilings, Miami could regret this move. That said, just a couple of years ago, this would have been an unthinkably low price for Morant. The Heat would have to be tempted to pay it.
Bigger Picture for Ja Morant
If Morant is still a Grizzly after the deadline, it’s because he didn’t have a market. Memphis will trade him if they deem any offer acceptable.
They should settle on this return. A pair of young players with upside is enough for an asset as distressed as Morant. If anyone should have second thoughts here, it’s Miami.
Perhaps they’d rather avoid Morant. Fair enough. That said, if they want to bet on their coaching staff and culture, adding Morant could set them up to contend in the East for years:
It could also be the biggest move of this year’s trade deadline.
