Derrick Rose is getting his No. 1 jersey retired by the Chicago Bulls on Saturday (1/24) and NBA legends Michael Jordan and LeBron James are among those congratulating the Chicago native.

The Bulls released a video of individuals congratulating Rose on his jersey retirement and it features Jordan, James and a bevy of current and former NBA players.

The Bulls selected Rose with the first overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. Rose won the 2008-09 Rookie of the Year Award.

In his second season with his hometown Bulls, Rose became the first Chicago player since Jordan to make the All-Star team. That was just the start of Rose’s ascension to stardom.

During the 2010-11 season, James’ first with the Miami Heat, Rose made NBA history by winning the MVP Award. He is the youngest MVP of all time and joined Jordan as the only Bulls players to win Rookie of the Year and MVP.

The lockout 2011-12 season saw Rose make his third All-Star team. Unfortunately for the Memphis product, he never made an All-Star team again due to injuries.

Rose tore his ACL in Game 1 of the 2012 playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers and missed the entire 2012-13 season. He played in only 10 games during the 2013-14 season before tearing his meniscus against the Portland Trail Blazers and undergoing season-ending surgery.

One of the most explosive point guards in NBA history, Rose appeared in 51 games for the Bulls during the 2014-15 season. He tore his meniscus again but underwent a procedure that allowed him to return toward the end of the season and play in the 2015 playoffs.

In Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals between the Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers, Rose hit a game-winning 3 at the buzzer against James’ club. It is considered one of the biggest shots in Chicago basketball history.

Before the start of the 2015-16 season, Rose suffered an orbital fracture in his eye and underwent surgery. He played in 66 games that season, but the Bulls missed the playoffs for the first time in the Rose era and made a major pivot in the offseason, trading Rose to the New York Knicks to build around Jimmy Butler.

Rose finished his Bulls career with averages of 19.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game. He’s ninth in franchise history in field goals, fifth in assists, ninth in points per game and 11th in points.

Rose retired from the NBA before the start of the 2024-25 season. He played for the Bulls, Knicks (twice), Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons and Memphis Grizzlies, compiling averages of 17.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.3 blocks per game.
