The Milwaukee Bucks are considering making a significant trade that might aid their chances of convincing NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo to stay, according to Eric Nehm of The Athletic.

The Bucks are 11-16. They are in 10th place in the Eastern Conference standings and Antetokounmpo is currently out with a right calf strain.

“But while the outside noise may have fans of opposing teams drooling about the potential of adding Milwaukee’s two-time NBA MVP to their roster, league sources told The Athletic the Bucks have told teams they are looking to add to their roster in hopes of fortifying their struggling team in the week leading up to Dec. 15,” Nehm wrote. “That messaging could certainly change as the Feb. 5 trade deadline nears.

“Five months after the Bucks’ stunning decision to waive Damian Lillard en route to adding big man Myles Turner on a four-year, $107 million deal, it appears they aren’t waving the white flag on Antetokounmpo’s future in Milwaukee just yet. Instead, league sources said they’re considering making yet another significant addition that might aid their chances of convincing him to stay.”

Before the season, Antetokounmpo requested a trade and wanted to be traded to the New York Knicks, sources told DallasHoopsJournal. However, Milwaukee and New York didn’t agree to a deal.

The Bucks have lost in the first round of the playoffs three years in a row. Antetokounmpo has grown tired of losing, so his future is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

A top 75 player of all time, Antetokounmpo is making $54.1 million this season. He has a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season. The power forward doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract.

A future Hall of Famer, Antetokounmpo is averaging 28.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game this season while shooting 63.9% from the field and 63.5% from the free-throw line.

The Bucks are telling teams right now that Antetokounmpo is not available for trade, sources said. That will only change if Antetokounmpo requests to be moved.

One of the greatest players in NBA history, Antetokounmpo is a two-time MVP, one-time Finals MVP, one-time Defensive Player of the Year and nine-time All-Star. He holds career averages of 24.0 points, 9.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.
