Al Horford signing with the Golden State Warriors this offseason upset an NBA executive.

Horford, who helped the Boston Celtics win the 2024 championship against the Dallas Mavericks, signed a two-year, $11.7 million contract with the Warriors.

“Horford was one of the best signings in the league over the summer, it broke our hearts because we wanted him badly,” an Eastern Conference executive told ESPN. “And they got him for $5 million.”

The Warriors have started the season 2-0. They beat the Los Angeles Lakers on opening night and took down the Denver Nuggets in Game 2.

Horford is averaging 9.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists through two games while shooting 46.7% from the field and 50.0% from beyond the arc.

“For me, it’s a privilege to have this opportunity and to be here,” Horford said. “They’re so accomplished. I do understand that there’s a lot that comes with it. There’s a lot of challenges. But I’m pretty excited.”

It’s certainly strange seeing Horford play for the Warriors, who beat the Celtics in the 2022 NBA Finals in six games. Horford not only lost to Golden State in the NBA Finals, but he also had several battles with Jimmy Butler when Butler played for the Miami Heat.

The Warriors lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the 2025 playoffs in five games. Stephen Curry suffered a hamstring injury in Game 1 and missed the rest of the series.

Golden State has won four championships in the Curry-Draymond Green-Steve Kerr era. It will be fascinating to see if Horford can help the Warriors win another ring this season.

A five-time All-Star, Al Horford has career averages of 12.9 points, 7.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists with the Atlanta Hawks, Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, Oklahoma City Thunder and Warriors. He’s been in the NBA since 2007.
