Paige Bueckers scored 29 points on 12-of-21 shooting with four rebounds and five assists in the Dallas Wings’ 97-96 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday night.

She added another chapter to her remarkable rookie season, breaking the Wings’ rookie assist record while becoming the fastest player in franchise history to reach 500 points. She also became the second-fastest player in WNBA history to reach 500 points, 100 rebounds, and 100 assists.

“It’s hard to reflect when you’re in the middle of it because you’re so focused on the day-to-day,” Bueckers said. “As a team, it’s never about how many points you score, it’s about how you contribute to winning on any given night. For me it’s just about being the best teammate, the best leader, and contributing to winning.

Carrying the Load Without Arike Ogunbowale

Her relentless attack defined Dallas’ 97-96 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks, who survived a furious late rally. With Arike Ogunbowale sidelined for the second straight game, Bueckers shouldered the offense — slicing into the lane, finishing through contact, mixing in her midrange jumper and setting up teammates when the defense collapsed.

“Paige was amazing, just getting downhill and putting pressure on the rim,” Myisha Hines-Allen said. “She was attacking, attacking, attacking. I saw that dog in her today.”

Paige Bueckers’ Record-Breaking Assist

Bueckers’ record-breaking assist came in the first quarter when she found Hines-Allen for a layup, but her ability to dictate the game stretched far beyond one play. She fueled a late surge as Dallas rallied from a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter, capped by JJ Quinerly’s three with 15 seconds left to cut it to one.

The Sparks escaped on the final possession, but not before Bueckers had stamped her night as another benchmark in a rookie season full of them.

Head coach Chris Koclanes said her approach reflects more than just scoring milestones.

“The selflessness, right? The ability to just make the right play and the simple read over and over again,” he said. “She’s just not a selfish player. She can take over when she wants, but she’s wired to get her teammates involved and make sure everybody is feeling good.”

Defining a Rookie Season for Paige Bueckers

Even in defeat, Bueckers’ efficiency stood out. She hit 57% of her shots, was perfect at the free throw line, and scored or assisted on nearly half of Dallas’ baskets.

“We locked in during the fourth quarter on what we could control — defensive effort, pressure, intensity, and pace,” Bueckers said. “Staying confident and connected the entire game is huge. Basketball is a game of runs, and at any point it can shift. We forced it to shift our way in the fourth quarter, and that’s something we can take away.”

The Wings fell to 9-25, but Bueckers’ rise continues to redefine their season. What started as a franchise in flux is now the backdrop for one of the most decorated rookie campaigns in league history — one that on Friday added another line of distinction.

Dallas visits the defending champion Las Vegas Aces on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. CST on ABC.
