Los Angeles Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka said he is having “positive” conversations with LeBron James’ agent Rich Paul and reiterated the franchise’s hope that James will finish his career in purple and gold.

“All of the interactions we’ve had with LeBron and his camp, Rich [Paul] in particular, have been positive and supportive,” Pelinka said during a press conference on Saturday. “So, very professional, and Rich has been great. The dialogue has been open and constant.”

Pelinka acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding James’ future but stressed the importance of deferring to the NBA’s all-time leading scorer on his career timeline.

“In terms of LeBron’s career, I think the No. 1 thing we have to do there is respect he and his family’s decision in terms of how long he’s going to play,” Pelinka said. “I think that’s first and foremost, and we want to respect his ability to come up with his timetable. That’s really important. But if he has a chance to retire a Laker, that would be great.”

James, who will turn 41 in December, opted into his $52.6 million player option for the 2025–26 season. He is poised to become a free agent in the summer of 2026, ahead of what would be his age-42 campaign.

Luka Dončić Hopes LeBron James Retires as a Laker

A source told DallasHoopsJournal.com that Luka Dončić, who finalized a three-year, $165 million extension with the Lakers this week, wants James to finish his career in Los Angeles.

Dončić, who grew up idolizing James, played 23 regular season games alongside him last season. The Lakers went 15–8 in those contests, and Dončić believes the franchise can contend for a championship next season with James still leading the way.

“Luka loves playing with LeBron and has learned so much from him,” Dončić’s manager Lara Beth Seager told ESPN. “He has nothing but the utmost respect for LeBron and considers it an honor to be his teammate.”

Rich Paul: “We Want to Evaluate What’s Best for LeBron”

In June, Paul addressed James’ decision to opt into his contract, telling ESPN’s Shams Charania that while James remains committed to competing for a championship, he is also mindful of the Lakers’ long-term outlook.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Paul said. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all.”

Paul added that James’ decision-making at this career stage would be deliberate.

“We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career,” Paul said. “He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive, and want what’s best for him.”

According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne and Brian Windhorst, Paul formally informed the Lakers that James intended to pick up his option after the team did not engage in substantial discussions about a possible one- or two-year extension.

Luka Dončić Positioned as Los Angeles Lakers’ Cornerstone

Pelinka’s latest comments came as the Lakers announced Luka Dončić’s three-year, $165 million extension, a move that cements Dončić as the franchise’s long-term centerpiece. The extension runs through the 2027–28 season, after which Dončić will be eligible for a projected five-year, $417 million supermax deal.

While the Lakers have not offered James a long-term extension, the front office remains hopeful that a championship-caliber roster can entice James to finish his career in Los Angeles. The team added Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart on short-term deals this offseason, alongside Dončić’s continued commitment.

For now, the Lakers will enter the 2025–26 season with James and Dončić leading the roster, balancing experience and future potential.
