San Antonio Spurs stars De’Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama “have developed a close relationship,” according to NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN.

Wembanyama and Fox appeared in only five games together last season.

Fox played in 17 games with the Spurs after getting traded by the Sacramento Kings before undergoing season-ending surgery to repair tendon damage in his left pinkie on March 18, while Wembanyama was ruled out for the season on February 20 after a blood clot was found in his right shoulder.

The Spurs went 2-3 when Fox and Wembanyama were in the lineup. That record will be much better next season.

San Antonio has a talented core of Wembanyama, Fox, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson and Dylan Harper. The Spurs’ new head coach is Mitch Johnson, who is taking over for Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich.

Fox played in 62 games with the Kings and Spurs last season. He averaged 23.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 6.3 assists while shooting 46.3% from the field, 31.0% from beyond the arc and 82.7% from the free-throw line.

A one-time All-Star, Fox will make $37.1 million next season. He is signing a four-year, $229 million extension with the Spurs. The 27-year-old has career averages of 21.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists with the Kings and Spurs.

Wembanyama averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.8 blocks last season while shooting 47.6% from the field, 35.2% from beyond the arc and 83.6% from the free-throw line. He has fully recovered from his blood clot.

San Antonio selected Victor Wembanyama with the first pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. The big man has career averages of 22.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.7 blocks.

The Spurs haven’t made the playoffs since 2019. De’Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama will look to end that streak next season.
